This one is driving me crazy.
AFI 36-2903 (Uniform Regulations) says only that Majors and above must have one, and that it is an optional item for everyone else.
What is driving me crazy, is that no one seems to be able to agree on when one should be worn. The AFI doesn't mention it.
I'll be attending a memorial day service at a major cemetery along with other volunteers from my base. Several of the volunteers happen to have them, but no one knows if we should wear them or not.
Any thoughts? |

| I think in a lot of cases they look better with the service dress uniform than the garrisson cap. I would wear it. |

McPeak eliminated it, and then attended a funeral with the Joint Chiefs. He was the only one without the "wheel" hat and looked like a doofus. Fogleman brought it back with a change...darts and farts were now authorized for majors.
Usually you only wear it when told, but for a funeral I would definitely think it is appropriate. |
