Details on Midair Crash
The report of the Filipino captain of Gaz Century provided details about the conditions under which the Turkish pilot was rescued.
The report, which was released Friday by dailies Eleftherotypia and Eleftheros Typos, read that the Turkish pilot had a gun, yet at no point did he threaten his rescuers or the Greek army officers that boarded the Panama-registered merchant ship.
Instead, he handed it over when he was asked to. In particular, it stated that at 13:42 "the Turkish pilot went aboard the ship and was led to the champers of the ship’s officers.
He was then offered water, warm coffee, clean towel, a blanket to cover himself and dry clothes. Speaking to the chief, he refused to give his name and just said he is Turkish.
The chief informed the captain that the Turkish pilot had a gun. The captain advised the chief to ask the rescuee pilot to hand over his gun, which he did. His gun was kept in a safe place. We were informed by the rescuee pilot that under no circumstances would he join the Greek search-and-rescue team."
The report also read that it was the Greek Super Puma helicopter that arrived first, while the Turkish one arrived with a 21-minute delay.
Furthermore, the Filipino captain’s report said that the captain himself thought it was wiser to hand the Turkish over to his countrymen, coming to terms with the pilot’s claim.
