CARACAS, Venezuela

Venezuela is considering selling its fleet of U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to another country, perhaps Iran, in response to a U.S. ban on arms sales to President Hugo Chavez's government, a military official said Tuesday.

Gen. Alberto Muller, a senior adviser to Chavez, told The Associated Press he had recommended to the defense minister that Venezuela consider selling the 21 jets to another country.

Muller said he thought it was worthwhile to consider "the feasibility of a negotiation with Iran for the sale of those planes."

Even before the U.S. announced the ban on arms sales Monday, Washington had stopped selling Venezuela sensitive upgrades for the F- 16s.

Chavez has previously warned he could share the U.S. jets with Cuba if Washington does not supply parts for the planes. He also has said he may look into buying fighter jets from Russia or China instead.

Empty threats from Chavez, as usual.

I'm not saying they're empty as in 'he won't do it', but empty as in 'does this make any difference'?

What is Iran/Cuba going to do with old Block 15 planes with no access to spare parts or foreign expertise? They'd much rather buy new Russian planes.

Indeed, and for the technology it isn't necesarry too, they have the info already, from Pakistan and General Dynamics at the time, as they placed a huge order for the f-16A at the time. These planes are not state of-the art anymore now too.

Recent edition of combat aircraft somethingorother details Iran's previously thought to be unsucessful efforts at upgrading thier Tomcats. Seems they could keep them flying better than we could. I just dont like the idea of Iran having as capable of an airframe as the f-16....whatever block it may be.

Well, first of all if you are banned from buying weapons (at least from one source) you don't start selling what you already have. f-16 is the premir fighter of the FAV and I don't see them giving it up until they have an OPERATIONAL replacement in SUFFICIENT numbers.

Second, I don't think Iran is too keen to add yet another type to their already too many various types. They already have 8 (EIGHT) different types: F-4, 5, 14; Su-24, 25; MiG-29; F-7; Mirage F1 all in numbers ranging from 20-60 (operational). Adding another 20 planes of a different type would be too much of an effort in exchange to what they would gain in terms of capabilities.

aokeeffe, the "mighty viper" from Venezuela is some 20 years old, has no BVR capabilities, no ECM whatsoever and a downgraded APG-66.

Good ol' cousin hugo, always good for a chortle when you have a slow press day. This sounds like it would hurt both air forces, not that I'm opposed to that idea. From what I've heard (could be wrong), FAV's jets are barely MC enough to taxi a lot of the time, to say nothing of being effective flyers.

I am tin pot "president", hear me (try to) roar!

all is just stupid words from those who dont know anything about it...

Chavez think that fighter is like airliners and Gen Muller might knows about fighters that they are planes and nothing much more...

Now if they showed up on E-bay for private sale, that might make the US Government mad?

(I'll start counting out my spare change....... Wink )

You guys want to join me in that activity after Castro dies (hopefully SOON! Mad ) ? I can't wait for Havana to be the Las Vegas of the Caribbean again Cool !

Seriously, I don't see how Iran would benefit from F-16s except from some type of confusing activity with some painted in U.S. schemes. Even then we'd see 'em coming from a long way off with the wrong IFF codes and it would be AMRAAM time followed shortly by Miller time Twisted Evil !

Now, if they only go Ebay Whistle ...
