RE: TEG's map: Still too many gaps for my taste. IMO, need Dets at Syracuse, and maybe Holloman. Dunno what to do 'bout the gap on the west coast. Not a whole lotta places left to put fighters between Fresno and Portland. Beale maybe? Klamath Falls still has Det barns (at least Google Earth says they do...) but don't know if they're still in commission.

F-16 pilot was ready to down her father's plane

By Steve Hendrix, Published: September 15

Oh, and one other thing about that F-16 pilot we wrote about in this space last week .
That commercial airliner she was supposed to bring down on Sept. 11, 2001? It turns out her father could well have been one of the pilots.

What's the point of having an alert fighter with no ammunition?

Not every base has an active alert mission with armed fighters at the ready. As I understand it, things went to $h*t so quick that day that bases in the area sent up what they could with whatever they had to be used in whatever fashion was deemed necessary. Most of the jets that were already up were originally programmed for normal training sorties (and hence, lightly armed, if at all). Because of the speed at which events were unfolding, they didn't have time to rearm the jets still on the ground so they launched with whatever was already loaded. When the airborne jets returned, the live ordnance was waiting for 'em and they were reloaded and relaunched.

Also recall that air defence is a NORAD responsibility so there are RCAF air bases at Comox and Cold Lake. These are probably more important for the defence of places like Seattle and the north Californian coastline given the usual path of incoming airliners.
