Good news for Hill
Tuesday, August 8, 2006
Hill Air Force Base received some good news last week. First, the Pentagon scrapped plans to eliminate the two-star commander position. Under the proposal, which never gained traction, the commander position, currently held by Maj. Gen. Kevin J. Sullivan, would have been eliminated. Wing commanders at Hill and bases in Oklahoma and Georgia would have reported to three-star generals at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, reported the Standard Examiner's Shad West.
We agree with Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch and the Utah Defense Alliance that losing a general would have lessened expertise at the Hill. "Asking Hill to do its job without a two-star general would have been like asking a football team to play without a quarterback," Sen. Hatch told the Standard.
UDA Chairman Jerry Stevenson described the news as "fantastic." We agree with Stevenson's argument that there is too much interaction between local officials and Hill's leadership to not have a general here. Without a strong advocate for Hill here locally, our influence with the Pentagon leadership might have been diminished.
Let's face it: It just makes sense to have a big, two-star general here supporting the base, pushing its goals and being a strong contact with the Pentagon.
The second piece of good news is Hill's 309th Maintenance Wing and its support units being recognized for increased efficiency with modification of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.
West recently reported that the base's "309th Maintenance Wing's F-16 Common Configuration Implementation Program recently won the 2006 Gold Shingo Prize for excellence in manufacturing."
This is high praise and those honored deserve our praise. According to F-16 Production Chief Wayne Hansen, 850 maintainers worked more than 1 million hours a year upgrading F-16s at the base. He told West that "the program has reduced flow days from 142 to 121."
The Shingo award is administered by the Utah State University College of Business. In manufacturing, it is regarded as the Nobel Prize is in other endeavors. Until recently, it was only open to private sector companies.
We appreciate the hard work at Hill that earned this prize. Those on the base and its advocates are proving the wisdom of Pentagon leaders who decided to keep the base up and running after the recent base realignment process.
Hansen told West maintainers are ready to excel even more. "We have worked hard to improve our work and we're happy to compete. This is something we want to sustain in the future. It has taken a lot of time for us to achieve this goal. It really shows that we are America's best."
We could not agree more. |

Isn't Hill's 2 star a Materiel Command guy? The 388th FW/CC doesn't report to him, he reports to 12AF or ACC. Senator Hatch's grasp of our organizational structure leaves me.....underwhelmed...
and I'm offended by the dog lieutenant cartoon Meathook.....there no call for disparaging dogs that way |

| I believe we have more generals now in "created" positions than we did during WWII with vastly reduced numbers of troops. I might be wrong, but it sure seems that way. Give some of that brass some steel (wrenches) and put their butts to work. |

To me, it's more like asking a football team to play without a head coach. |
