Stupid... yes, could be done back in WWII as I read of Russian guys taking of in german 109's.

So I was wondering, considering todays jets and the support systems that go with them. Can one walk onto an airfield in China and steal a J-10?

Knowing how paranoid they might be about this. what could be done..any one out here with some idea of the complexities involved?)

Vice versa what sort of securities exist at airfields (I'm so dead...how long before I get THE knock on the door Laughing )

Walk onto a military airbase, stroll over to a fighter jet, hop in and fly away? Piece of cake. Heck, I did it twice last year. The Chinese are kind of PO'd at me, but what are ya gonna do?

I remember seeing long tome ago a B-category movie (Firebat, Firefox, Firecat...something like that) a CIA operative who stole and flew a supersecret MiG prototype out of the USSR.

Now, in the real world it's much easier to convince a pilot (read traitior) to defect with the plane. Here are only the most well known such cases:
Iraqi Munir Redfa on MiG-21 F-13 fled to Israel on 8 August 1966
Soviet Belenko on MiG-25P to Hokkaido, Japan in 1976 (rumors are he also took the technical manuals with him in the cockpit)

Syrian Abdel Bassam on MiG-23 ML to Israel on 11 October 1989
Soviet Alexandr Zuyev on MiG-29 to Turkey in May 1989 (wounded a guard at his home airfield in the process)

So it happened and it will happen again...but only if someone from the "other side" "collaborates".

Some jets require a start cart and ground crew to get running while others do not. Just fish around under the ejection seat for the keys - that's where we normally stash them....

Actually they are attached to that cable that is wound up inside that clear plastic tube near the canopy actuator. Just grab that and keep pulling until the keys pop out....

OR

There is also a spare set attached to the yellow and black handle in the center front of the seat. But you have to unlock that by rotating down the smaller yellow and black lever on the front left of the seat. There should be a little silver pin you have to pull first. Just make sure you are sitting in the seat to do this as there is an interlock like riding lawnmowers have that won't let the keys release until you are sitting in the seat.....

But don't forget, that you can only get those keys, heck into the cockpit after you press the button on the alarm remote to de-activate the alarm.

Its just like the one on my car, one button for pannic, one to lock it up, one to unlock it, and one to open the canopy (trunk).

Any time I forget where I parked my just, I just start pressing the unlock button to see which jet's lights start flashing and which one makes the chirping sound.

And yes, make sure you are properly seated in the chair, as those keys are notoriously hard to get to if the interlock isn't taken care of.

It was Fire Fox 1982 staring Clint Eastwood. Great flick, the CGI for its day was top notch, however improbable, it was still a good fun movie to watch. During the highlight of the cold war cloak and dagger era.

Falconfixer... I think you're onto a new security feature for jets. Have a fake keyed ignition switch, like a car ignition switch labeled "Off, Run, Start". Tape the key to the bottom of the seat (as suggested). Then wire the switch up to a 110dB horn that will sound until the battery dies. Instant theft warning device! Laughing

Just snag the low fuel warning horn out of a Dash 60 or a Mule. That should draw plenty of attention.
