to all, have you guys checked out the F-22 takeoff that went into the vertical?
At first, I downloaded it and watched it and I was impressed. Some time passed and I started thinking about what the aircraft did exactly and the more impressed I was.
OK, the airplane hurtles down the runway and lifts off, the
pilot of the F-22A does not allow the ship to gain nearly any forward airspeed, it is translated into a very steep pull up into a vertical climb. The aircraft climbs in the vertical and then proceeds to slow down in a very controlled manner until it completely stops. Yes, the F-22A completely stops in a vertical climb AND the most impressive part is that it hangs there in a 90 degree attitude completely defying gravity for a few seconds.
So, the plane has little forward airspeed, goes into a pure 90 degree climb and then proceeds to "helicopter" or hover at this attitude above ground for several seconds, then the nose quickly comes down in a nicely controlled maneuver and proceeds to RAPIDLY accelerate away. I have seen fast aircraft before, but I have never seen a fighter jet do that.... This was fromone of the videos that DesignAndConquer posted up.
JetBlast
Got to say that was also the most impressive thing about the display. The impeccable CONTROL of the aircraft during all the maneuvers. Everything seemed precisely measured, balanced. The F-22 never seemed at the edge of it`s control envelope. Is that down to excellent flight control law software or a damn good pilot. The TVC system seems very flexible, engine thrust precisely controllable. When you see a display like that, which was just a practice, you can see where some of the $$$s went! |

Those videos of the Raptor at Langley were awesome.
I got goosebumps on the back of my neck watching them.
Thanks DesignAndConquer for providing them.
Simply breathtaking to watch. |

Before I hit the hay, I figured what the heck, I'll put a full resolution clip up for a couple weeks (until I run out of space again). Check out the vapor flying off the stabilator at the pull. Short but sweet. And by sweet, I mean loud.

Sweet! BTW I'm sure I'm not alone when I say "How much would you want to burn the high res stuff to DVD?" |

DesignAndConquer and guys, probably seen this before but I have to say this is the COOLEST F-22 video I have ever seen!!!
Here is some of what`s in it...
Tailslides, live cannon firing in the air and on the ground, winder and AMRAAM launches, missile launch whilst rolling, TVC flexing, vapour trails, 4 ship Raptor formations....AND a cool soundtrack!
Who did that soudtrack! I want it!
If this was a sales vid` it would be pretty impressive. I want one!

I remember that song quite well. It was played during the catshot sequence in Behind Enemy Lines. Apparently hearing that song and seeing a Super Hornet on the big screen makes me spontaneously start fist-pumping and cheering, much to the chagrin of those around me.
Thanks Snypa777, I'll be blasting this video all day |

Airshows are just that...AIRSHOWS. They are used to impress the crowd. The F-22 is real cool to watch turn and climb, but it's real strength is in it's supercruise, stealth and, most of all, the new employment tactics used by it's pilots. I can tell you that it is employed in a way unimagionable to contemprary fighter pilots. It's only downfall is the software suite, but that is being worked out.
The Air Force just released an article about an F-22 droping a JDAM from 50,000 feet and 1.5 mach. That gave them a stand off of 24 miles! These are new capabilities that the Air Force will be continue to develop tactics to be able to exploit.
I agree with what others here have said. In a visual fight, the new high off-boresight missiles (AIM-9X, AA-11, Python IV and V, etc) combined with a helmet mounted sight will equalize the maneuverability of aircraft. Hell a Piper Tomahawk with a helmet mounted sight and a Python IV would keep most Viper drivers out of a turning fight. So now, we have to be real good BVR. But the problem there lies in being able to positively ID the target to prevent fratracide. |

Hey, they're, also occasionally used to sell merchandise to Shah's. Well, not just the Shah but other countries, they're meant to impress impressionable people. This means funding usually by way of either other countries buying the jets *cough*Russian jet sales*cough* or be happy with the military. They're also used to get impressionable kids like me into jets early so that later in life we go into aerospace engineering, the air force, or something to do with jets.
Also, don't forget that some of the JDAM will be getting diamondback kits so their range will increase even further. Yes, that's right, we can drop bombs from even farther away without ever getting into the danger zone *cue Top Gun music*. Now I'm curious, is there anything out there for an extra long range AAM for the USAF. I know the Russians have some really long range AAMs, but since we retired the AIM-54, we've had nothing to match. I know we shouldn't get into a pissing contest with the Ruskies, but........ |

I wonder if the AF will try for the zoom climb record with a stripped down Raptor? If it really can cruise at 50,000', what can it do in a full AB climb?
Who needs $$$ cruise missiles when you can toss guided bombs 20+ miles from a stealth platform in the upper atmosphere? |
