No One Injured As UAV Crashes In Southern AZ
Wed, 26 Apr '06
Predator Down Near US-Mexico Border
A Predator B unmanned aerial drone went down Tuesday morning over southern Arizona as it was monitoring the US-Mexico border in an effort to find smugglers and illegal immigrants.
CNN reports operators lost contact with the $6.5 million UAV about 3 am Tuesday. US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Michael Friel said the wreckage was located by a government helicopter about three hours later.
No one on the ground was injured, and nothing was damaged -- well, except for the UAV... but officials didn't immediately know the extent of damage to the vehicle.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the downing.
Officials said while it was flying, the Predator B has aided in apprehending nearly 1,800 illegal immigrants, as well as the seizure of over four tons of marijuana.

I guess that not having anyone injured is kind of the point in flying UAV's...

| Confusion lies in the term "Predator B"...that is the General Atomics name for their new turbojet powered version...the fielded version of the basic Predator is the MQ-1B (The RQ-1A being the preproduction veriosn and the M added when they added Hellfires). The USAF name for the new one is MQ-9...we avoided the name Predator B like the plague to avoid confusion. |

Well, at least he is sitting down and not flying while they investigate.

One of these days they're gonna mount a dummy ACES II in the control cab so the ex-fighter guys don't feel completely outta place. When he pulls the ring, instead of being blasted outta the cab, the screen will say "You've just ejected. Insert credit card to continue play." |

I'm sure he jumped up and ran to the bathroom....unless of course he was in there when it crashed.
Real UAV pilots lean into the turn. |

Actually, they are putting a laser range finder doofer on it so pilots will know how close to the ground they're getting on landing. The WOW switch is not hacking it. The joke going around is that the laser doofer will have a light go on in the cockpit and say "GAME OVER".
WARNING: TRUE STORY
UAV: Creech tower, Deadly 4. Request go around.
Tower: Negative Go Around Deadly 4. You have impacted on the runway.
UAV: I have???? |

I can vouch for that personally Maddog! Last summer, I was on the ramp at an "Undisclosed Location" (no, Cheney was not there), and a Predator comes in for a landing.
It looks like it's getting a little too low, a little too early, and I tell my pilots:
"Hey, he looks like he's about to..."
CRUNCH!
"...do what he just did."
The Predator was a VERY small pile of twisted metal after that. Pretty cool. I saw my first ever mishap, and nobody was hurt...well, all except some drone controller's pride maybe. |

I hear that's an idiosyncrasy with Preds, since the operators use the camera for landing. Something us Shadow guys don't have to worry about |
