Surprisingly we haven't heard anything about it here at Aviano...and 2 of those jets were block 40s too... Not that it has anything to do with it... you would expect something here, seeing as USAFE always cracks down pretty hard on maintenance issues (or...just Aviano...).
Unfortunately we've had to lose 4 F-16s though...happy, for one, that no pilots were lost...I haven't been in the Air Force for too long, but how does it feel when you lose a jet and/or pilot? I havent't experienced that nor do I want to...
Well, it is a bad deal. I have had the unfortunate opportunity to be involved in a couple acft accident investigations, one of which was at luke back in '99. although it is always a relief to know the aircrew gets out, the loss of a jet is unnerving.
At one point in my career I turned a wrench or two on <a href="f-16_fighting_falcon_airframe-2947.html">89-2099</a> and <a href="f-16_fighting_falcon_airframe-2963.html">89-2115</a>, which were both recently lost. <a href="f-16_fighting_falcon_airframe-2943.html">89-2095</a> and <a href="f-16_fighting_falcon_airframe-2727.html">88-0490</a> were the investigationsi regretfully was involved in. Fortunately I have not had to deal with the loss of a life in either of them. Not something you really want to be a part of.
We cannot lose sight of the fact that they are machines, and machines fail from time to time. If it is all put into perspective, think of how many sorties Luke puts up a day.... and to have one mishap isn't really all that bad. It just seems like it because we have lost 4 jets in 4 weeks. |
