I always wondered.. What do chopper pilots do for fun, Fixed wingers can do rolls, loops and split-s's(not taking into consideration Airliners). Whats fun in chopper. except chugging along at 100 knots. Question

Well, some helicopters CAN do loops and rolls. But I'd say 140 KIAS 10 feet off the ground is all the adrenaline a pilot should need!

If ya ask me, just keeping it in the air is a pretty neat trick.

100 knots, 10 feet of the ground, at night looking through night vision goggles, through trees...FUN???

Many airforces seem to practice jet versus helicopter combat! Fun! Apparently, it`s quite difficult for a jet to kill a helicopter if the helo` pilot knows what he is doing...as long as the jet is flying relatively low?
Have heard that at higher altitudes, for a jet to get a heatseeker to lock onto a helo` which is just above the ground is no easy task because the rotor wash reduces the heat signature.. Fun fun fun.

The trick to helicopter vs fighter fights is for the helicopter to keep turning into the fighter. Radar AAMs make it a moot point really, but for a guns vs guns fight, it can be unnerving to try and track a target that forces you to push the nose further and further below the horizon when you're already at low altitude.

As far as IR and rotor wash, notice the big boxes on the back of an Apache's engines. They're designed to utilize the rotor wash as much as possible to reduce the exhaust temperature.

I've spent many an hour hanging out in the boom pod of -135 with a good book and watching the world go by at 30,000 feet. Good times...

HOWEVER, when I worked MH-53's, I spent some time sitting on the cargo ramp watching the world go by at 2000'. Alot better view and is really relaxing!!!

Let's see, the wings are moving faster the aircraft. That has to be unsafe right?

I know there's at least one video online of a helicopter flying about 10 feet off the ground... he starts heading between some trees and you here him say, "Think we can make it?" Well the tips hit the trees and they fall like 20' out of the sky. Also, my desktop at work is an Apache upside down popping a whole lot of flares for a real cool effect.

I'm afraid the point is being missed here about helicopters... They don't actually fly... The earth rejects them. LMAO

It’s the semi-controlled repulsion of the ugly by the beautiful.

Some time ago I posted a japanese video of how to open a beer bottle with a helo onto this site; now a helo being used for remodelling:

Why do I expect John Cleese to appear?

Q: Then why do they need that big propeller at their back?

A: There has to be some way to get it back on ground!

1. It’s the only way to distinguish it from a large Margarita maker

2. Its a virginity device, without the tail rotor it will be truly s*****d (into the earth)

Actually contribute to the fight while the Eagle Fags cruise around at 30K feet popping into Iraqi Air Space from Kuwait to make sure they get their tax free money and dicking off.

For somebody thats flown both, Helos... all damn day.
