This post is sent out to anyone(military or contractor) who has seen and heard an F-22A take-off in full afterburner or close to it and how that sound compares to an F-15C or F-15E or even say a -229 powered Viper. For me, some of the most impressive aspects of a jet fighter aircraft from a ground observer's view point is the noise a particular aircraft makes, whether approaching you, flying past or in the distance as it already passed by. Probably for me, the loudest sounding fighter aircraft that I have heard was the F-15E, that thing is extremely loud in certain circumstances. How does the F-22A compare to an F-15E? Does anyone have any wave files of a -22 taking off or say a low high-speed pass???

| I can assure you the F-22 has no peer when it comes to decibels! The GE powered F-16 is in the neighborhood of 135db and the F-22 is approx 160db. |

To me, it's louder than an F-15C or D, possibly comparable with a Mudhen. Let me put it this way, I can have my head turned, and know if it is a Raptor, an Eagle, or a Rhino taking off. The sounds are that distinct to me.
No tengo wave files amigo. Dig around on the net, and you should find something. Hell, if they've got wave files of Jenna Jaimeson...uh...never mind.

I never really get to hear it without the F-16 chase though...

| The F-22 has a helluva sound to it - better than any other fighter I've heard, but the B-1 in afterburner is definitely louder. The F-22s I saw were painted up in desert camo colors. Friggen sweet. |

The higher the jet's exit velocity and the more engines on the jet, the louder the sound. No doubt the size of the exhaust area will influence the amount of sound projected too. The F119-PW-100 has seriously high exit velocity (that's why it puts out so much thrust in AB), so it's no wonder the F-22 is so loud. The B-1B has very powerful engines too. They're also very big and there are 4 of them. I am not surprised it's louder than an F-22. |

| How about the sound just prior to the takeoff roll (presumably some engine runup?) She truly sounds like a bird of prey. |

I just saw that statement about a "desert camo color" Raptor and was wondering about that myself.
IMO, the Raptor is louder than an F-15E, but not by that
much. The P&W motors also has a unique sound to it.
Interestingly, IMO, one of THE loudest planes I've ever heard is the single-engined F-16. For something so small with only one engine, that little thing yells LOUD! |

| For a short time I worked at the B-1 CTF at Edwards. While there, I was able to observe a Minimum Interval Takeoff (MITO) test point with one B-1 taking off 15 or so seconds or so after the first one. We predicted the lift off point and stood on the side of the runway at that point. I have been around every jet in the AF...and never have I heard anything as loud as four F101s in full burner. I would guess a 2-ship of Eagles would sound the same, and a two-ship of Raptors would most likely dwarf it, but all I can say is the ground shook when those two Bones lifted off 200 feet from where I was standing. |

| I saw the Raptors at Tyndall last year. I was busy on the line with our 16's while on TDY so it was a loud environment overall and I'm not sure how much my info will help. On take-off it did seem to be a little louder than the F-15's there. Definitely louder than our 16's, but similar to a degree. We have Blk 52 CJ's that just plain hoof it! The thing that got me about the Raptor was that after it passes overhead while in the pattern (very low and right over our spot on the line) it was pretty quiet. I'd say during that maneuver it is quiter than any of our (USAF) primary fighters. Then again it may have just been covered by the noise in our area. |

| For just eardrum splitting loudness, the Harrier ranks pretty high. |

Roscoe's right, the Bone on a MITO T/O is gonna be louder than anything except maybe the space shuttle. I was gonna chime in that the F-14 is as loud or louder than an F-15, but the Bone has the same engines X 2. You know its loud when you feel your insides vibrating like crazy. Kinda cool too.

Ever been so close to the runway that you can feel the heat from the afterburner when it goes by? |
