Dunno for sure but I think that's the ECS exhaust.

That is the exhaust for the Ram air that goes through the heat exchanger for the ECS system. Is a great way to get warm during a launch on a cold day.

It's also a really good way to get really hot on a hot day. Not comfy at all when you're grabbing pins out of the box.

Then again it's a nice place to sit waiting to pull chocks on a cold winter morning. As I recall (and that goes back 15 years or so) the exhaust is about 325 degrees.

Good for warmin' up the steel toes in the winter, but rough on the reflective belts in the summer!! FYI the the ECS exhaust is much smaller (flush with the acft) on very early blocks. (5,10,15)

Fast way to heat up a MRE while on deployment as well. #7 Beef Stew, 1 minute each side.

The ECS exhaust is turbine ran, not ram air. I believe it turns off once your airborne.

Beef stew, good choice. Just don't get stuck with the old 'Omelet with Ham'. Nasty. Speaking of nasty, the entire hangar cleared out in Qatar when a guy opened a 'Chicken a la king', that had swelled up. Imagine 4-5 years of bad stuff 'growing' in a sealed bag...
Back on topic, yes, the ECS exhaust is engine bleed air. Not sure if it turns off after takeoff (wouldn't think so, but let me think about it...) as I've never been quite that close to a flying acft...

Nice answer Mike. We need ECS guru to answer that for us. I think it runs all the time, however I've been wrong before.

I think it runs all the time also. Seems to me if it shut off, we would have had to check that feature somewhere along the lines in phase. No ops check that I know of.

I know its's been a while for a few of ya'll... the ECS exhaust does stay on after take-off. It's the nacelle ejectors that shut off after WOW is removed. That's why we alway check it on the ground. Ram air taks over for the eng bay while in flight.

Thanks, I thought that it would have stayed on during flight using engine bleed to insure consistant flow.
Back at MacDill we had pilots constantly complaining all summer that the ECS / AC didn't work well when they turned on the radar as well as every other bit of electronic kit that they could carry. They didn't like the answer that it was normal operation, that everything has a priority when it comes to 'cool' and unfortunatly they were way down on the list...
