I don't know about 50mmh per flight - the slide show (Navy product) quoted 18, but it's still a shame Sad .

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Tomcat fly its Fini Flight just after the Oceana airshow last weekend? Sorry I missed the last go. Fini Flights are always cool...well...unless it's a helicopter. Rolling Eyes Fini Flights for fighters, I meant. Wink

TC, I guess you're right. At Airliners.net I saw Oceana on September 6th with the last Tomcatters doing their pilot sh*t for the last time... Shame!

They sure as hell didn't publicize it like I thought they would. D@mn shame. Of course, in this day and age, we wouldn't want the wrong people to be aware of the publicity surrounding a Fini Flight...OPSEC.

Oh well, I got to see them fly once in my life, a few months ago. Guess that will suffice.

I'll never forget the Tomcat demos I've seen - especially the last ones at Nellis - gets me all misty eyed. I always wanted to fly Tomcats when I was a kid. I especially loved watching them at Miramar when the "home team" would grab one of the squadron birds for the demo and one of the truly great pilots (do a google search on C.J. Heatley III - call sign Heater) out of the Navy Fighter Weapons School would do the Demo. A Tomcat doing a dirty roll on takeoff was a sight to behold Very Happy ! I remember one time when Heater had to break off that roll after about 60 degrees and call an IFE. He just grabbed another bird at the end of the airshow and rocked the house Smile .

Oh yeah - and the announcer quoting Maverick and Goose while introducing the high speed pass -

"I feel the need, the need - for speed" Thumb !!!

One think I know I will never forget was the flying of the colors when the Leap Frogs had one of their team members bring the American flag into the airshow attached to his leg and they timed it perfectly with a Tomcat pass so that the tomcat flew right behind the flag. So many memories from so long ago...

Back in 1992 I saw one at the Dutch Naval Air Service's 70th Anniversary. And in 1999 they took part in the Dutch Frisian Flag exercise...

Just saw Tomcat Sunset on the History Channel, thought it was well done. Made me think, What do the F-14 and Tom Cruise have in common---Both their careers are over. I'm sorry, the F-14 didn't deserve that.
