Now I know that this a place for mostly F-16 related items. But a sad day has come. Today the last active F-14 squadrons in U.S Navy service returned from their last operational deployment. It was the first 4th gen fighter to enter service, the first to draw blood (in U.S. service), and sadly now the first to be retired. Fair winds and following seas Tomcat!!!

Salute

Roscoe,

These jets are some of my favorite aircraft in the world and very close to my heart. I grew up with them in San Diego and I will surely miss seeing them blast around the sky - Maverick has to go Mach 2 with his hair on fire, right Wink ?

That being said, I would much rather see them blown out of the sky in a final blaze of glory, serving the U.S. one last time as training tools than being scrapped on the ground!

Here's hoping Dale "Snort" Snodgrass comes through and fulfills his plans to field a civilian F-14 demo team in the next couple of years Thumb !

What is sad is that the Navy is run by a bunch of pencil neck accountants that can only see the bottom line and pushing the next big thing for the skimmers. And think that the Super Hornet is a suitable replacement for a platform ( F-14 ) that started it's days as a near no peer group jet. Where is that now? SH? No... JSF? Hardly. There is no bravery now in the USN to put a real no peer group jet on the carrier deck. Aircraft carriers are important big sticks. They need a real no peer group jet to fly off the decks and kick some serious A far away from the carrier deck that has a real long arm of the law. Something on F-22 scale that can go in REALLY take over an air space with zero contension.

Elvis has left the building.

As good an idea, and as useful as the QF-14 would be, it's not happening. Heh heh! You thought the QF-4 was a logistical/maintenance nightmare...Shocked

Anytime...within the next 6 months...Baby!

I'll say it once and I'll say it again. Not all Tomcats are being retired, just in the U.S.

Yep, I'm quite sad too... And a sterling bird she was. To act as sort of a hanky, here's one during better day: kicking a$$ (although in this case virtually during DACT)...

Those are by far the nicest markings, and then the original ones when they were still called VF-84 and played their part in the Final Countdown movie, fighting Jap A6M Zeros... Ah, memories...

Don't know. But if they're smart they will. Let's hope that 'Snort' is able to field a civilian F-14 demo...
