So Rampage.....can you give us a clue as to why the <a href="http://www.f-16.net/f-16_news_article966.html">canopy was jett'd</a>?
We had a potential jettison here at Hill a few years ago but luckily there was no canopy installed when the internal jett handle was pulled. Worked as advertized for everything else though. |

As for the exacts on this one I'm not possitive (I got some pics tonight and the tail split the canopy in exactly in half). However I do know that they where doing the alt gear ops check.
A couple of years ago my squadron was doing the same check and this is how we punched the canopy off. We had a pretty new guy in the back seat but he still should of known better. The guy in the front seat(the most experianced guy) was reading the TO. During the check you put the A/C up on jacks so you can swing the gear. So the A/C is on jacks, but before you swing the gear you've got to pull the landing gear pins.
So the guy in the front seat said, "pull the pins" and the guy in the back seat pulled all of his ejection seat pins(I never said this guy was smart). OK so the pins are pulled and the landing gear is up and the next step is to pull the Alt gear handle to deploy the gear. So the guy in the front seat says, "pull the handle". So the guy in the back seat pulled the canopy jettison handle and it worked as advertised. "BOOM" the canopy tears off hits the cealing bounces off the wing and lands about five feet from a guy on the ground.
All I know is everyone had to go through refresher egress class after that. (A class I used to teach) I'm quessing the 62nd one is pretty close to the same story. |
