I guess you all heard about the IAF raid on Saddam's nuclear facility at Osirak in 1981 (operation Opera). I was wondering IF a similar raid could (not would) be conducted against Iran's main nuclear plant (Bushehr). I read an article with this subject (http://www.acig.org/artman/publish/article_398.shtml ) but i'd also like to have your opinion on the fezability of such a raid (politics aside, just technical, military and tactical considerations) I hope you understand that i don't want this to happen i'm just creating a scenario[/u]

Too much distance to cover and I'm positive that Iran has not consolidated all their research facilities into one area. Not feasible in my book for a one strike knockout.

I am with Akruse21 on this,If the "Attacker" doesn`t know where ALL of the important facilities are, they couldn`t be sure of stopping the program for good. That would just delay it. It would have to be a sustained campaign. Then we open Pandora`s box. Iran has intermediate range missiles that can hit targets in southern Italy.....Soon they may have weapons that can strike as far as France and Germany. They would have no need to use them if they are left alone.

I remember reading about the cold war, some defence analyst (with Rand Corp.`) reckoned that western intel` NEVER found a Soviet underground facility that was successfully hidden. They were told of their exhistence years later. Iran may have "successfully hidden" their program by now.

Israel said that the window of opportunity had passed in 2003/4.

Snypa - Wouldnt it be successfully hidden if the western Intel never found it??

So the statement that they never found a "successfully hidden" facility doesnt really mean much.

Anyway back on topic, it would be a fair hike for Israel to take out one facility, and wouldnt they have to fly over neighbouring states. Also considering that Iran has decentralised its nuke technology you would need to strike more than one location.
