Thanks everyone. As a woman, I don't have an "off" switch - I am 100% female at all times. I'm not a feminist, but if I want to do a job and I can do it as well or better than a man, then let me do it. If a male co-worker wants to help me because I'm a female, then I call him a gentleman. All I want to do is enjoy the work I have to do eight or more hours a day. And I think I would LOVE to work with the best aircraft around. Hill sounds like an good deal; I will look into it. What about avionics and ECM stuff? The professor I am seeing tomorrow is a avionics man.
Again - THANKS. And FYI: there's no mid-life issue. I've just realized that there's really no point to life if you're not living what you dream.
I agree with your comment fully...(I race bikes for fun).
What most of these guy don't know is that their is a different way of work outside the AF. Most on here have never worked as an A&P......
Seeing as I have...I can tell you it is very demanding and you are always faced with duties that you must do by yourself. For example I worked as a Line Mech for a large 747 Cargo operator.....when the aircraft came threw for repairs it was stay until it was GTG...that sometimes meant changing a Heat exchanger out on a JT-9 by myself.or a wheel ...you don't need to be strong but you cannot be weak...like I said if you can hold 70lbs above your head you would be fine by my book.
In the airforce it is way different....thats why these AF guys are piping in all the "i've worked with tons of women and they were the best" ...that does not apply to the airlines.... if the workcard says change brake...you change brake...if not ....lead says go home!
Now if you want to work on cessna's you will be fine...But it is safe to rule out heavy line or hanger maintenance(airline).
YOU CAN WORK AS AN A&P ......just stay away from the large stuff.
....now for the rest of you guys.....unless your working as an A&P its best you not pump her full of the military info. |

| Couldn't have said it better myself. There is a big difference from military to civilian. Like I said you are more on your own on the civilian side of things, You also have the FAA always watching and if you cant do your job right then bye bye license. |

| I have worked both sides (A&P and Mil) since 1975. I can tell you that there are good women A&P mechs. Viperkeeper you are still off base. And Stutler - what you say applies to men as well. And not being able to lift a pump won't cause you to lose your license. Only doing improper or illegal mx will. AND - the FAA is hardly ever around anyway. |

nobody said it only applies to women....
it may not lose you your license but it will cost you your job!
Like I said ......workcard says change acutator.....you had better be able to lift it! you will get the "just go home" tone from the boss if you keep asking for help. |

| They are not constantly standing over your shoulder. Gimme a break. I've spent my fare share of graves at the gate at lots of airports. Maybe they know the people to spend more time watching? |

They are usually out on the ramp and not around the coffee break table. |

| My post had absolutely nothing to do with becoming an A&P or joining the military. Its a program where civilians (like serino) can become a mechanic for the AF as a civilian at the entry level. Which to me sounds like exactly what she is looking for. Her original post did mention B-52's and F-16's. Well here at Hill we have C-130's, F-16's and A-10's and soon to be tha F-22's on a limited scale. They are hiring for sheetmetal, general mechanics and electricians the last time I looked. If someone is willing to start at the bottom and apply themselves its a perfect opportunity to be civil service. |

Thanks everyone. I know I'm too old for the military unless I'm a nurse or a lwayer, both of which are NOT me. It's my loss that I didn't sign up a long time ago. I have deep respect for Veterans and contribute to Vet organizations as often as I can. I have no problem at all getting dirty: I fought fires in coastal Oregan in getting a BS in Forestry. Right now I am taking care of my fiance's sled dog team; he passed away 1 October 2005. I work at Penn State and am sitting in on an Aerospace Engineering course (Astrodynamics) and wondered if the Aerospace Eng degree would be a better plan. I don't know how good of a designer I could be (never know till you try!), but I like the idea of working directly with the aircraft. I also did some graduate work using a large piston/cylinder and really liked working with my hands.
what do you do at penn state? |

What I do at Peen State.....I am technically called an IT Consultant. I do training for new programs that go out to the University (user training). You can hear me at www.ers.psu.edu under traning tutorials (yeah, like you would even want to! boring ) It is not my cup of tea, but I need an income. I gotta tell ya - I went to the A&P school (Penn Technical College) on Friday
WHOA!!!!!!!!!
What a great program! Four year BS with first two years A&P and second two avionics. They have an A6 and numerous small aircraft. Oh, baby! And I guess I see what you meant by male-field; there were two women and 30+ guys. They talked mostly about commercial and corporate jobs, |

| but I think the training would make me pretty marketable. I like the sound of the Hill deal a lot; I am definitely going to check that out. You are a tremendous help!! You should charge consulting fees. |
