The 1st F-35 is nearing completion with the P&W F135 engine being installed very soon. Everyday, it's looking better and better. Pic can be found on the following "Flight Int'l" link:

Even though AV1 will not have the weight reductions built into it as it was too late to do so, everybody is saying it will kick a$$. F-35 AV1 getting ready in late summer/early fall. |

Good find OP! This is the first profile shot of the JSF that I've seen. As with the Raptor, they've obviously made some changes from the prototype. The new canopy on CTOL variant is a definite improvement. I never liked the Harrier-style canopy on the X-35, even though the STOVL F-35 will retain it. It's difficult to tell from the pic, but it also looks as if they've raised the cockpit giving the spine a gentle upward curve toward the canopy, much like the Viper. This is another improvement IMO, but it might kill the name "Razorback". I thought they'd also go with the "clipped" wingtips and horizontal stabs ala the Raptor. I was surprised to see they didn't. |

I wonder what empty weight will F-35A be if the structural weight of its airframe now is 20,975 Ib / 9,514 kg......
Personal estimation:
1. F-135:
It is said that it's a engine with the thrust of 43,000 Ib class now. If its T/W ratio is 10.5~11.0:1 class, than its weight should be between the range of 1,750~1,900 kg theoretically.
2. Sensors, Electronics, and EWS:
Rafale, a fighter of 9.5~10.5 ton class, has these equipments with the weight of 800 kg class in total. I think these equipments for F-35 should be between the range of 1,000~1,200 kg theoretically.
3. Surface coating and painting: hard to tell, perhaps between 500~1,000 kg.
--> The empty weight of F-35A, my personal estimation: 12,750~13,600 kg. |

Razorback could still work Whiteman B2. The front of the plane still looks like a pig. Heres a link with a picture....

Cool CGI pic, Sniper. I do see what you mean. The nose is rather a cross between a Raptor and a Harrier....and it still ratained enough of the engine hump to be tagged "Razorback". |

Pratt & Whitney will either exchange the defective engine(s) or refund the full purchase price.....with receipt, of course. |

Grapevine says it is going to be a very tight fit, with the engine on the high side and the opening on the small side.
