I know I read somewhere that the F-35 JSF had a lower frontal and a higher side and rear RCS than the F-22 Raptor? Has anyone heard a similar claim???? |

(no secrets here, just common sense logic...)
Given that the JSF is much newer design, a better nose-on RCS should not come as a surprise. On the other hand, all aspect LO is very expensive and unlike the Raptor, the JSF was bought with cost as a key parameter. Besides, if our Raptor boys do their job right, nobody gets on the tail of the JSF. |

I guess I must be getting old. It was something like a month or two back? It may very well have been on a forum? |

OKAY.....good luck. There's a lot of forums out there, and I wouldn't hold many of them to be "credible". |

| One also has to be operationally realistic...In a2a mode the F-35 is definately gonna carry external weapons as 4 Aim-120's aint suffecient.. |

| I don`t know of course. I would think though that the F-22 is a STEALTHIER platform all round than the JSF. As Roscoe stated, the F-22 had a lot more $ thrown at it. By stealth I mean infra red suppression work, EM emission control, internal airframe shaping, as opposed to just external shaping and coating work to manage radar energy. |

Now that you bring in up? I have also heard that the JSF will be able to carry 6 AMRAAM's intenally. (i.e. with two replacing each PGM/JDAM) |

| Didn't the government compare the two aircraft as F22=bumblebee/marble and the F35 as a ping pong/golf ball? JL Raleigh NC |

| Snypa, I've heard that the 35 isn't completely coated with RAM like the 22 is. This is not a reliable source, just something I heard. I heard its only coated where the radar stuff is most intense. Any word on stealthy external pods for the 35 and the 22? |

I Know that the GAU-12 25mm gun pod is a stealthy tear drop shaped gun pod that can be used on naval JSFs. I would bet that any pod designed to hang from the two aircraft would be of a stealthy design...along with stealthy weapons.
I don`t think that the current generation of pods like litening/sniper/tiald would be used on the `35. They are not stealthy. These kind of targeting systems would be carried internally anyway i would have thought. |

Ive also seens plans by LM and Weapons manufactures to make weapons housings for the wing rails for munitions. These housings, which are basically just shells that enclose the weapon are stealth. When the weapon is dropped or fired the shell is ejected first and then the weapon is deployed.

Yes the E/O is internal:
Quote:
Lockheed Martin Missile & Fire Control and Northrop Grumman Electronic Sensors and Systems are jointly responsible for the JSF electro-optical system. A Lockheed Martin electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) will provide long-range detection and precision targeting, along with the Northrop Grumman DAS (Distributed Aperture System) thermal imaging system. EOTS will be based on the Sniper XL pod developed for the F-16, which incorporates a mid-wave third generation FLIR, dual mode laser, CCD TV, laser tracker and laser marker. BAE Systems Avionics in Edinburgh, Scotland will provide the laser systems. DAS consists of multiple infrared cameras (supplied by Indigo Systems of Goleta, California) providing 360º coverage using advanced signal conditioning algorithms. As well as situational awareness, DAS provides navigation, missile warning and infrared search and track (IRST). EOTS is embedded under the aircraft’s nose, and DAS sensors are fitted at multiple locations on the aircraft.

Ahh, thanks ELP. Had brain freeze there! I posted virtually the same quote on another JSF thread some time ago!
Designers trying to minimise the amount of gear hanging off the airplane. The Raptor has this kind of integration too. |

I read you posting on the F-35 vs the F-22 back in January. I placed a very poor response, sorry.
I came across that information also, I think the source was a USAF general testifying before congress who made the statement but, I can't give you the source or who media organization of which I got my information.
While the F-35 has a lower RCS than the F-22, frontal aspect only, the F-35 has the greatest RCS when a bad guy is approximately 40º above the F-35B. When hovering, the bad guy is in this position they are looking down into the lift fan of the F-35B
