| Our squadron flies with the Habu callsign here in Japan. It's not very popular, people are always trying to chaff it off to someone else. I'd take it but I'm not a flight lead yet. They probably just don't know what it means. It's also one of the few callsigns the Japanese controllers can pronounce correctly. |

Dang Habu. Didn't know you had that kind of clout to call down to an ops section and demand your forum handle here be used as a call sign. I'm impressed. |

Impressive indeed! I'd like Habu to say how he did it. I think that Wildcat would fit as a callsign, wouldn't it? |

I think STBYGAIN's sqn flew with the Habu callsign - not our forum member with the same username (Habu) |

Well I'd like to say I just waved my hand and it happened.....but alas I didn't....
If it's anywhere near Japan, it doesn't surprise me, the habu pit viper is indiginous to Okinawa, and the reason the SR-71 garnered the name. |

Yo!
Short version.....
Way I heard it, was when the Blackbirds were flying outtta Okinawa, the locals (many Nips included) nicknamed the thing Habu due to its shape when coming at ya. Same for Viper comin' at ya.
In any case, many of the SR crews had the snake on their sqd patch or airplane patch from late 60's.

Um...yeah...
And Gums, the Habu patch became THE patch to have, as ALL aircews who flew their first operational mission were given one. And not just the crews from Kadena, it became standard for any Sled driver and RSO. |

Too funny.
Here is a graphic I did some time back of the other non-Habu patch of Det1 out of Kadena. Got the patch. |
