I was at the 162FW and noticed the A/R door being opened on launch. When I asked why I was told that the pilot requests an ops ck prior to A/R missions. I was also told of a discrepancy between the job guide and the -1 manual. Any toughts on this.

weve always ops checked the A/R door during the launch if the pilots hitting the tanker. pilot flicks the switch and the crewchief verifies that the door opens and light comes on as well as it closing and the light turns off.

Confused So....can you actually eyeball the AR door cycling from the ground? Seems like you'd need either a C/C with some serious hops or a ladder of some kind.

You can see it, when I was at Luke the pilot asked me to check it, never happened to me after that.

We watch the door open, and check to see that the light on the back bone comes on. The position switch for the door being open is inside the bay and acts like a WOW switch I believe. So seeing the light come on is idication the door is open. You can see it open and close from the ground, and when open, the smoth look of the back bone has a slight drop in it where the A/R door is when its open. So even if the light was in-op, you would be able to tell the door was not closed. Also you could check the negitve pressure valve on the externals as they would depresurize once the door is open.

When we anticipate AAR we always ask the cc to check the door opening on the outside when we flick the sw. Inside the cockpit you check for the "rdy" lt and the "disc" lt when hitting disconnect on the stick. If both of them are on at the same time: no AAR...

True about the depress of the externals, in flight the jet also goes into t/o and landing gains.

We did it all the time while I was in the 522nd. I think that it is part of the -6 work cards for a launch (or it was a cannon supliment).

The switch which is actuated when the A/R slipway door opens is the A/R door switch and this switch is only for illuminating the RDY status light for the pilot to give the "status" ready to accept tanker boom, it has really nothing to do with WOW. The circuitry however where this system works on is from NLG WOW because that is also the circuitbreaker that you have to pull when you want to test the A/R system on ground with a A/R test adapter. Otherwise you can not test the part when you simulate that the pilot ejects the A/R test adapter with the help of the NWS/AIR DISC/MISL STEP switch.
With NLG WOW on ground it is for activating NWS, during flight for weapons system and when A/R door switch is in OPEN position it gives the pilot the opportunity to eject the A/R tanker boom.

The AR door does not need to be open to turn on the light on the backbone. That light simply turns on when the AR switch is turned on with the external lights turned on. There are lights inside the area where the hookup is that does require the door to be open. When you are on the ground you are able to see the door open. The door actually lifts up before it drops.

Unless something has changed there are no lights inside the recpt. Only the two outside.

ummmmmm.......there has always been lights inside the recepticle (meaning the IFR bay). There however has not always been a light on the verticle that illuminates the backbone.

There are slipway lights in the receptacle. I wanna say four (two per side).
