I have asked this already but it was in a different thread so I dont think many people saw it.

Since I know that I am not qualified to be a pilot, I am curious if any of you know what the requirements are to be part of the ground crew (life support, egress, etc.)

Hey, if I can't fly them, I would happy to be around them. Very Happy

Pass the ASVAB test (just get over %60 in Mecahincal/Electrical) and request Fighters in, Life support, Egress, Weapons, Crew Chief,... With the previous career feilds you could end up anything from a B-1 to T-28. Even my career feild (Crew Chief) has been restructured. It went back to the way it used to be. If you are a Crew Chief in Fighters, then you can work: F-16/F-15/F-117/A-10/F-22 (with Experience other ACFT) etc.... the only Crew Chiefs really locked to an Airframe are the F-22 guys, so I will probably never work the Viper again in the Military. Well, I could if after my freeze I request orders to Korea!

Well one of the easiest ways is to enlist in the air force, score above a 45 on your asvab (the mechanical section) and make sure that your recruiter or the job laison nco at meps puts you in the program. Its really simple. Also the crew dawg AFSC is short manned so getting in is easy. Another way is try to apply for an opening with a civilian contracter, but good luck because without prior aircraft experience or certifications your screwed. So good luck!! Very Happy

Pardon the Stupid Civilian question - are these crew chief positions enlisted or officer grade? (just curious)

Excellent info...Thank you.

another question?

Within the ground crew, are there less desirable areas to work in? Which are viewed as the best ones to work in?

Crew Chiefs are enlisted. Not to be confused with maintenance officers which is a career track for the officer corps. Maintenance officers do management of the maintenance squadrons, of course under the guidance of senior maintenance NCOs (enlisted) who themselves did aircraft maintenance in some form or another until they were pushed up to management / supervision positions.

I entered the AF guaranteed a F-16 avionics position. When you go to the recruiter tell them you want to work aircraft and if you have a certain one you would like to work you can get that career field it just may take a little while.
