555th FS a/c lost over Serbia during Operation Allied Force back in 1999.

88-0550

I got some pics from the Museum Of Warplanes in Belgrade of the remains of that airframe. You might wanna add em to the airframe history/photo library.

HazF16, Thanks for the photos Very Happy . I've now uploaded both to the gallery and incorporated the tail picture into the new article Holloman commander recalls being shot down in Serbia . Sad Apologies for missing this material when we added the news story.

In the second photo I did a double take, because 88-0550 had no serial on the tail, it was marked 555th FS. Then a moment later remembered that the serial was on the ventral fin. So this fragment must be from one of the fins.

It surely has looked much better in the bast Sad

One question about the aircraft database entry. At one point it says:

Quote:

Dec 1998
Special characteristics:

* Mission Marks

Comments:
Wore 5 mission markings for Operation Allied Force.

Didn't Allied Force start in March 1999 ? How could it have mission markings 4 months earlier ? I may be nitpicking, but it may need correction Embarassed

Might be from one of the previous actions before OAF.

yeah, I really don't like the idea of F-16 parts being displayed as war trophies, especially since it was the Triple Nickel command jet.

Hi, I just happened to be referred to this site by a friend of mine (a huge "Jet-head" and aircraft modeler) I was over there from '95- late '99 and I happen to be one of the two guys that painted 88-550; my proudest work... Anyways, I think those mission marks may have been from Operation Silver Wake over Albania; can't remember if we downed anything though...

Anyways, might be worth checking...

The 555th didnt fly any jets during Operation Silver Wake...that was all the 510th's thing. We stayed longer on our rotation of the Deliberate Guard / Decisive Endeavour crap.

They may have botched the date on when those mission markings were applied, I do know that the Neon Chicken flew quite a few combat missions before she got shot down during that particular conflict.

Although it was never my assigned aircraft, i was always proud to see it in the air, especially when you could pick it out when it was in the arrival pattern over Piancovallo.
