Since Daniel (Habu) and I (habu2) have such similar usernames, I was wondering if this forum software allows for graphical avatars. Seems folks get the two of us confused fairly often because of our similar user names (I'm sure Habu is flattered by this ) and I was thinking maybe graphical avatars would help us differentiate users a little better.
Thoughts?

Heya,
The problem with avatars is that you need to allow everybody his own avatar or you get the same problem with confusion again. Once you do that, it becomes a mumbo jumbo of all different styles, some appropriate, others not...
So at this moment we do not really consider the option of an avatar. Perhaps you could use a (modest) signature to distinguish your posts a bit more?
I personally don't confuse your posts with those from Habu. You can just tell from the quality of the content who's who. Just kidding Habu! |

ha ha Lieven you scallywag!
I'm all for simple avatars, but some people get carried away and have big, elaborate, bandwidth-chewing graphics. So it's a 50/50 thing in my opinion. On the ARC though, both h2 and I have different avatars, and we usually don't get confused...usually....some poople just don't read the posts, or the sigs.
Speaking of sigs though, on here, my sig is different from h2's.
And flattered? HA! about the only thing I'd love to take credit for is your Viper pages G, but I won't....also note that I give credit to you every time it gets mistaken
<--also, who's got more posts here, baby! |

Understand. I admit I do like the avatars over on ARC. Another thing I like is how they tailored the user levels to reflect the theme of the forum. It might be fun to try that here.
I added a sig to help ID me - it reflects my background in flight simulation... |

Hi Habu2, thank you for the suggestion but the problem is that we cannot have ranks like 'Captain', 'Colonel'.... because those ranks might conflict with the ranks our posters have in real life. |

Understand, I was thinking more in terms of titles more indicative of the theme of this site. For instance, over at ARC the 'ranks' have a scale model building theme:
Level 1 - Newbie
Level 2 - Snap-Together
Level 3 - Glue Required
Level 4 - Canopy Polisher
Level 5 - Rivet Counter
Level 6 - Tenax Sniffer
Level 7 - Step Away From The Computer
Level 8 - Full Blown Model Geek
Level 9 - Life Member (Mon-key Handler)
I bet some of our real-life Viper crews could chime in with nicknames they have for experience levels on the jet.
Just a suggestion - I know you guys have nothing better to do.... |

Yeah I thought about Block numbers but that seemed kinda dull...
Maybe a Newbie could be "A Yard of Flight Line"...
Level 2 could be "Flight Cadet"
Level 3 = "UPT"
.....
Top level could be "Combat Veteran"
Webmasters could be "Test Pilots"
These are just ideas... seeds if you will. |

Maintainers and Drivers should have a special rank attached to them that is something simple. "F-16 Operator" or some such thing. As they are the people that actually use the equipment IMHO they should have that title under their name, for the purpose of someone that just stumbles in here, they will know that a post with that title under it tags the info as if it came from the burning bush.
The rest of us IMHO is just fine "as is" but thats just me. |

| elp, see your POV but this is something that is driven by the total number of posts for the user. For example under your user name you have 3/5 'bubbles' and the 'rank' of 'Active member'. Post wh*res like me and that other Habu character are 5/5 and 'Elite'. Well believe me I don't consider myself 'Elite' but those are the existing level labels. I was just suggesting maybe we could get a bit more creative or in the 'Viper' spirit. |

How about ordnance-related?
Level 1 = BDU-33
......
Level 5 = MOAB

Yeah no problem there. This forum software is a mod of phpBB. Which means you have what you say - Titles assigned to numbers of posts, so that wouldn't change, what ever you decide ranking names to be is fine, but you also have special ranks that the admin can create ( example the title: "F-16.net Webmaster" under Lieven's name) that you can assign to a username. You can create more than a few special ranks for the small number of people that would have them:
Example:
F-16 Driver
F-16 Fixer
F-16.net Contributor
IMHO this site is unique, because you are actually reading things first hand from the source expert. So a few titles attached to those people wouldn't hurt and it would also keep someone low on the food chain of F-16 knowledge, that is new to the site, from wasting time asking something contrary to what a rank expert on the topic just posted.
Just an idea. My 2 cents, adjusted for inflation. |
