29 October 2009:
Two F-16s.
ROCAF.
About 6:44 AM, without any warning, entered the restricted area above Taipei City, as part of a joint exercise to test the reaction and readiness of the air defense units in the northern area - and woke up some surprised residents.
The ROC military explained the F-16s acted as aggressors that raided the capital, and had to fly in before 7 AM, when civilian air traffic started to get busy.
Also, the air defense units knew there would be an exercise soon, but weren't forewarned WRT its time. |

26 January 2010:
F-16 of Luke AFB, en route to Red Flag in Alaska, showed a ROC flag in the cockpit, before the HUD.
ROC President Ma himself is in USA now, en route to Latin America, and the Chicom is professionally mute about this ROC Presidential visit to USA. 8D |

Surprisingly, if you hit that link and copy the Chinese characters, you can plug it into Google language tools for a pretty good translation.

21 April 2010:
F-16.
ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
About 2 PM, after take-off, at 6,000 m AGL, almost near-miss with a Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 Islander aerial photo plane, B-68802, of Da Peng Aviation (I can't find its official English name?).
Horizontal separation was less than three NM, vertical separation was less than 1,000 m, and estimated minimum separation was less than 300 m.
Civil aviation bureau said "near-miss" is less than 500 m. Da Peng plane was in correct flight course.
F-16 possibly flew too fast after take-off, and passed through Da Peng flight course from below.

11 March 2010:
F-16.
ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
IDF.
ROCAF, based at Tai Nan AB.
2 PM, during formation flight, IDF got loss, and almost had near-miss with a F-16. Separation was about 200 m.
Accident IDF was wingy of a flight of two that took off at Tai Nan AB. Leader was acting as attacker, and wingy was escorting the leader, but wingy lost sight of the leader, and wandered off their original flight path.
At 4,000', accident IDF wandered near a F-16 that at 4,000', was returning to Chia Yi AB. Horizontal separation was about two NM, less than the safe three NM.
ATC saw the situ, and requested IDF to climb to 5,000'. During its climb, vertical separation with F-16 was 900', and less than the safe 1,000'.
On 16 May 2010, ROCAF Command confirmed IDF pilot was punished.

| I second Geogen's' wishes for a speedy recovery (spinal injuries sound serious)! On a lighter note

*RUMOUR*
Reportedly, after several ROCAF crashes in 1999, the then ROC military Joint Chief of Staff, General First Class TANG Yao Ming (TANG Yiau Min) summoned all ROCAF wing commanders, each with a squadron commander and maintenance squadron commander, plus commanders of Army and Navy aviation squadrons, to an aviation safety meeting.
Lieutenant Colonel Xu attended as a squadron commander from Chia Yi AB.
Tang began to question each base commander, from Tao Yuan AB, then southwards to Hsin Chu AB, CCK AB, &c. Xu suddenly interrupted, raised his hand to request to speak, surprised the 40+ generals and senior officers, and Tang granted permission.
Xu said: scolding couldn't solve the problems; accidents during conversions to the then new F-16, IDF, and Mirage 2000, could cause pilots to buy the farm; the pilots didn't wish for the accidents themselves; they wouldn't accept the Joint Chief of Staff's scolding, &c.
Tang came from the Army, which is very strict WRT chain of command and obeying orders. After a moment of silence and staring, Tang declared a 10-minute recess, and left the meeting room.
Tang's attache told Xu to enter Tang's office. Afterwards, when Xu left, he smiled, and wore a wrist watch that Tang gave him.
WANG Li Zhen (WANG Li Jen), an aerospace engineer and author, remarked: as a wing commander, Major General Xu could've been a GIB (guy in back) in a two-seater flown by a younger pilot in the front seat, but in this near-miss incident, he was flying the F-16 himself, and leading at the front, as a role model to boost morale.
http://zh.wikipedia.org/zh/%E6%B9%AF%E6%9B%9C%E6%98%8E
Tang's profile includes: Minister of Defense (1 February 2002 to 20 May 2004), Joint Chief of Staff (1 February 1999 to 1 February 2002), Army CIC (1 July 1996 to 1 February 1999), and Army 2IC (1 March 1995 to 1 July 1996). |

2 June 2010:
F-16B.
21st Squadron, 455th Composite Wing, ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
UH-1H.
ROCA.
Near-miss, while F-16 was descending above Chia Yi AB.
9:40 AM, during RTB, guided by Tai Chung tower, ATC requested F-16 to descend to 6,000', and await next instruction. Pilots didn't echo the request, and descended to 5,300'.
Student pilot thought tower said 3,000'. Instructor pilot in rear seat, realised the mistake, took control, climbed to 6,000', and near-missed a ROCAF UH-1 at 4,300', under the F-16.
About 10 AM, F-16 landed at Chia Yi AB.
Same afternoon, civil aviation authority warned Chia Yi AB that this violated the international regulation of horizontal separation five NM and vertical separation 1,000'.

24 June 2005:
F-16B Block 20. 6812. 93-0833.
Chia Yi Composite Wing, ROCAF, based at Chia Yi AB.
About 10:12 AM (not about noon?), after training sortie, or familiarisation flight for tactical intercept course, while landing, after touched down, didn't brake in time, slid off the runway at the 4,000' spot, and stopped in the grass.
Aircraft "wasn't seriously damaged".
Pilots were OK.
Pilot: Zhuang. Flight commander
Co-pilot: Major General Chen. Deputy director, "integral evaluation department" (this is how Google translates the original "Zheng Ping Shi").
Runway was wet by rain.
http://www.hkcd.com.hk/content/2010-08/ ... 585751.htm
2010/08/30:
Taiwanese media claim accident report claims: after landing on wet runway, deployed drag chute, but the plane yawed to the right. Pilot released drag chute, tried using brakes and rudder to correct yaw, but ineffective.
The plane glided for about one klick, and went onto the grass.
Repair costs NT$ 800+ mil, excluding engine repair.
Media claims Chen, as a guy-in-back, rides the accident plane to accumulate flight hours for the monthly flight bonus of NT$ 50K-60K.
The plane should've diverted to another AB without rain, but this would affect Chen's schedule.

About that thing with not being able to bomb the tanker due to thick clouds.
The pilots could not see the tanker on their radar?
Also why not skip bomb the thing? |
