I was reading on Wikipedia about the YF-23 and while I read in there it mentioned something called the B-1R. Supposedly it is competing with the F/B-22, and YF-23 bomber for the regional bomber role. It didn't say much except that it has greater speed and less range because it uses the F-22's engine instead of its original. Do any of you know anything else?
I'm fairly certain at this point it hasn't gotten beyond the PowerPoint stage. Seems like a lot of work to re-engine a beast that is pretty good at the job it does now, especially given that we do not have that many airframes. Either a stretch FB-23 or FB-22 would be better (should be BF or just give it a B designation). I personally like the idea of using a stretched F-23 airframe reusing as much of the F22 avionics as possible.
