Another aspect:
The F-22A provides, for the first time, a viable escort platform for B-2A. A combination A2A and A2G load makes sense here.

Of course... why would a B-2 need an escort? Wink

hey smiley,

I can tell you why real quick why the B-2 needs an escort. COST! The B-2 is too valuable an asset to leave alone. With the costs involved in the program, as well as the fact that there are only 21 B-2's in existence, escorting seems pretty reasonable to me. The sad part about it is that just like the F-22, money takes over. Great plane, very expensive, and therefore not cost effective enough to purchase more from Congress' point of view. Not to mention that with the cold war over, no good enough excuse to build more of them.

For the reasons cywolf cited, I don't think we'll ever see (ha ha) B-2 daylight missions. At least not until it's old and tired.

Most B-2 combat missions are in darkness. The B-2 is NOT escorted on those.

No, not currently, but it is an option for future, high-threat environments.
Cost:
2 B-2's = 1 Nimitz Class carrier. Wink

I also believe they're both made by the same company. Most of the US carriers come out of Newport News, correct? Well, Northrop Grumman owns both the B-2 stuff and Newport News. Our money would go to them either way.
