LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- A Jet Blue airliner unsuccessfully attempted to make an emergency landing Wednesday after its front wheels were turned sideways and unable to retract into the plane after takeoff from a nearby airport.
The plane carrying 139 passengers left Burbank Airport at 3:17 p.m. for New York's JFK airport, said Jet Blue spokesman Bryan Baldwin.
Jet Blue flight 292 was circling the Long Beach Airport, about 30 miles south of Burbank, as the pilot and aviation officials tried to determine what the best solution was. The Airbus A320 was dumping fuel over the Pacific, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker.
TV images showed the nose wheel turned perpendicular. Its back landing gear was also down but appeared to be in the correct position.
''After leaving Burbank, pilots reported a landing gear indication light on, meaning there may be a problem or issue with the landing gear,'' Baldwin said.
The crew then decided to return to an airport to attempt to land, he said. The pilots were ''able to determine the problem with assistance from air traffic control.''
Walker said dumping fuel would help the plane land.
''They can't be that heavy,'' Walker said.
No other details were immediately available. |

I don't think this section gets too much traffic...but are any of you watching? If the nose gear is turned sideways and locked, tires are gonna blow and the nosegear could rip off I imagine...
How much fuel will they keep on board? What could've caused this? Buggered up hydrolics? I'm drinking a Guiness on news overload tonight...Hurricane Rita, Tornado in Minneapolis, and an emergency landing... |

Oh gosh... Newslady "Is landing without a nosewheel difficult?"
"We're told the plane will be flying into LAX instead of Burbank because of longer runways. Why is a longer runway important?"
Now they cut to radar of a tornado near Minneapolis....sheesh! |

I'm sure this is going to make it's way into the Boeing vs. Airbus thread. Chalk one up for Boeing!
Best of luck to the crew/passengers...at least they get their own tv's to watch to ease the tension.
Can Airbus's dump fuel or are they flying low to burn it off faster? Searching for a picture of the gear... |

| looks like they're on final, should be an interesting show... They did dump fuel, supposedly, but don't know for sure. |

| Yeah, that was pretty amacing. I wouldn't have thought that the gear would have resisted. |

If it's fuel system is anything like the A300 then it can't dump gas. He had to circle for a while (3+ hours is what I heard) to burn some off, which in a way is a good thing 'cause it gave the Rescue folks some extra time to do their prep thing and the cabin crew a chance to fully explain to the passengers what to expect and what to do. |

After seeing that landing, chalk one back up for Airbus as the gear didn't collapse, which was pretty amazing considering it had been ripped sideways... |

Link is right the 320 can't dump gas. The pilot did an excellent job getting the aircraft on the ground safely. This is the same thing happened to one of our (America West) 320's about two or three years ago, but ours ended a little different. The reason the nose gear didn't collapse during the rollout is because he didn't use his thrust reversers if anyone wanted to know. BTW Boeing is better.

Is that a matter of fact or a weighted opinion |
