From photos such as this:

it looks like the JSF canopy is flush with the fuselage in the back, similar to some old MiGs, unlike the Raptor which has a Viper-like bubble canopy as seen here:

Will the JSF have such superior sensors that rearward visibility is completely unnecessary? Is this a sign of believing that this jet will NEVER be in a defensive WVR engagement?

According to www.jsf.mil, "...the F-35, which includes spearheading the work on the Electro-Optical Distributed Aperture System (DAS). This system will provide pilots with a unique protective sphere around the aircraft for enhanced situational awareness, missile warning, aircraft warning, day/night pilot vision, and fire control capability."

I LOVE the bubble canopy of the Viper. Does anyone else wonder why a similar setup isn't on the JSF? Isn't it a huge assumption to believe current technological dominance = future technological dominance and hence no dogfighting in this jet? Is this similar to no gun on the F-4?

Actually, only the F-35B STOVL variant won't have the "bubble canopy", since it's canopy was required to be cut short to accomodate the lift fan. But, both the F-35A and the -35C will have the extended canopy, which will actually be quite similar in appearance to that of the F/A-18's canopy.

Here's a photo of what the F-35A is expected to look like:

You also can check this other thread (Which is about the same topic) if you have anymore questions on this: http://www.f-16.net/f-16_forum_viewtopic-t-1797.html

Hope all this helps. Smile
