How important is it for an Air Force to be diverse in terms of aircraft? Is it better to have several different types of planes that can do similar things, but have different performance envelopes, or just a couple that can accomplish the different tasks and don't overalp much? It seems the US military is greatly cutting the number of different planes it's going to have. Is this a wise move from the strategic aspect? I know it will help from the maintenance aspect, but what would be best for this?

The former is changing and is leaning more towards the latter. Just take a look around, see what's in the works. Lots of interchangeability, it's been commenced some 30 years ago.

I think this is great from a strategic point. It gives battlefield commanders more versatility with fewer units while streamlining all logistics aspects of warfare. This is huge!

And considering how advanced (fighter/attack) aircraft are becoming nowadays, mission performance disadvantages between multi-mission and mission specialized aircraft is less and less as time goes by. Its also the economical solution that governments lean towards...

Oh... ok... I thougth this was something different. Got an email today reminding me about diversity training. Surprised

Smile Seriously, in USAF at least, we are so cost driven that a different airframe / platform ... whatever... better be something real special to get the funding.
