| Madrid, Spain to Miami, Fla to Valdosta, Ga. Severe culture shock! I think we would have went just about anywhere to keep from going to Moody. Korea was the only placed I disliked more than Moody, and that was a close race. Did meet my wife at Moody and still married after 12 years, so guess it wasn't all bad. Still stuck taking return visits to Valdosta to visit in-laws. Spent the last 4 years there trying to make a living on what they call a decent income in south Georgia, $7-8 an hour. You think that place sucks as active duty? Become a $7 an hour factory slave there. |

| Now that the 16s are gone, lots of money has been pumped into Moody. 400 more base housing units, sun shades, huge gym, more dorms and the town is taking off. Over 100k population in the county. the college is just years away from a 20,000 student enrollement. Heck even the mall is being expanded. The A-10 guys that were there in the 90s and come back next year will not believe how much it has changed. |

It has been awhile but the last time I went to Cannon AFB (TDY 2001), the surrounding areas (as you approached the base) looked like something out of a New York Slum. I was very, very surprised to see anyone living like that and from what I saw off base (outside the area, it was not much better).
How do you folks tolerate that (not that you control it either) but DAMN, made you want to PCS or stay inside the protected area....very odd to see any area so run down and beat up as it was. Anyone stationed there...how do you tolerate or drive outside without worrying about getting mugged?
I thought the town and base would create a drive of some sort to clean that crap up and give the base a better image |
