Hi,
I was wondering how many chaff and flare's are onboard an F-16. I believe normally 60 chaff and 30 flare's. But how many do the latest version's F-16's have? I have seen number 3 & 7 pylon's with extra dispensers. What do they contain and how many of them?? |

| The number of dispenser location varies with the different production blocks and, in some cases, with different customers (Israel is a good example). I'd have to do some research to determine which blocks had which number of dispensers. |

The dispensers in the 3/7 pylons are called Pylon Integrated Dispenser System (PIDS). It was developed by a Danish company (Per Udsen) and is used by the RDAF and BAF for example. The PIDS holds 30 chaff cartridges. For more info, see our article on the RDAF F-16s:

USAFR PIDS pylons can carry 3 buckets of 30 each for a total of 90 chaff per PID Pylon...Never any flares in the PIDS...I really can't speak for any of the other blocks, but our blocks 30's have only 2 dispensers on the main fuselage which can carry either flare or chaff. Later on down the road, an additional 2 were added allowing for a total of four dispensers on later models...I am sure habu2 will break it down... |

| Yeah, C+'s use 2, CG and CJ have 4, 3 on the left one on the right for those jets, makes it harder, cause Hasegawa hasn't modeled this yet, and my CJ needs another pair. |

90 Chaffs / 30 Flares for the Belgian F-16MLU. (info from a friend of mine, pilot in the 350th Squadron of the Belgian Air Force)
All chaffs are on PIDS, all flares on the aircraft. (PIDS can't carry Flares).

| Around the 86 model jets was where the extra 2 buckets began showing up, I guess around mid block 30. At Cannon, that was the way it was. |

I've only seen F-16s with 4 dispensers on the fuselage, and with 2 PIDS pylons for the maximum load. So that's 3 buckets of flare, and 7 buckets of chaff. There are also different kinds of flare. The 1x2 and the 1x1. The small 1x1 flare is only for training, never for combat operations. The larger 1x2 flares are always for combat.
I'm in the Air Force Reserve, and we have used PIDS pylons before, but not while on training flights. I think mostly during war time operations. We had a guy stuff station 3 with 3 buckets of flare once.......I laughed my a$$ off. He said "You said to put these on the left side." |

I know this may be a dumb question, but one thing I've always wondered.
What is the actual physical size of the chaff and flare cartriges, and how does the flare ignite upon release. |

I believe that the extra chaff/flare two positions were added between the 86 and 87 aircraft. During the Gulf War we had a mix of the two years. Our pilots were expending a great deal of chaff/flare and the number of positions was a determining factor on which aircraft was selected as a cann jet. (Fortunatly we had quite a few more 87's than 86's...)

| PIDS combat load for block 30+ is sta.3 PIDS w/ the 3 buckets of chaff=90 chaffs, we never put PIDS in sta.7, 1760 pylon goes there. |
