Thought i post this as he was a legend to most maintainers!!




A pioneer in the aircraft maintenance community and founder of the Air Force Combat Ammunitions Center has died at 79.

Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez, who spent more than three decades in the Air Force, died Dec. 30 surrounded by his family, according to an obituary published by the Logistic Officers Association. Friends and family honored Marquez during a Thursday funeral in Albuquerque, N.M.

Marquez’s Air Force career ended with his 1987 retirement and included a number of accomplishments, including the creation of “Ammo U” — a training course for munitions personnel — and the maintenance badge now worn by all Air Force maintainers.

A pilot with more than 2,000 hours in single-engine jet fighters, Marquez received the Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star with “V” and Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, among other commendations.

An award named in his honor — the Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award of Maintenance Excellence — is presented to military and civilian Air Force maintenance personnel each year for outstanding service.

Marquez’s family asks that memorial contributions go to the Logistics Officers Association Scholarship Fund or The Ranches. Donations for the scholarship fund can be sent to LOA Scholarship, Lt. Gen. Marquez Memorial, PO Box 2264, Arlington, VA 22202.

Sorry to read of his death. Had the pleasure of serving under him when I was at McChord in the 60's. He was the MX Officer / Captain at that time. He was passing thru a place I was working when he was a General and got to have lunch with him. A truly fine Officer.[/b]
