Now that should have been the fighter to replace the F-16C/D, instead of the F-35.

Looks like an ordinary F-16C CFT Falcon, but with way more payload on the air-to-air section!
As for a replaxement instead of the F-35, well, not really.

The fighter is not what counts, it's the one who's flying it that matters!

Here's some news that I came across while researching on this aircraft.

The Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) has recently launched the F-X fighter programme to find a replacement for the F-4 Phantom II. The JASDF is now formulating its requirements for a new fifth generation fighter. Likely contenders include the F-15E (upgraded), F/A-18E/F Super Hornet,Eurofighter, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, F-2 Super Kai and possibly an export version of the F/A-22A Raptor. The F-2 Super Kai will an enhanced version of the F-2 based on the F-16 Block 50/52 proposed by Lockheed Martin and Mitsubishi to meet the requirement.
At least 40 F-X aircraft are needed to replace two JASDF F-4 interceptor squadrons in 2011, with deliveries starting in 2008-2009. At this stage all options will be considered."

I have always had a fond admiration of Japanese Airforce, even during WW2. I find the F-2 an exceptionally beautiful fighter, come one, the paint scheme? gorgious!
I would like to see this go somewhere. Japan needs a good 5th generation a/c. Unfortunatly the people dont have enough interest to fund any military spending there.

160 MILLION , that's like the price of a Raptor!!! What made the F-2 get SO expensive?

Same stuff that made the F-22 expensive I hear. Japan had no interest in purchasing enough to drive the cost down. Also the synthetic materials needed to build the longer wings drove the cost up quite a bit too. Maintanance issues also limited the production.
I like both ideas for an F-2 Super Kai AND an Export F-22. Did not realise LM would be willing to do that but if they do Japan's a pretty rewarding country to send it too. Look how greatful they were when we sent F-15s and F-4s.
