They are absolutely, without a doubt, 100% sure they are getting a predator squadron. The question is whether the 138th FS will convert or if they will add a squadron to the 174th FW. Hancock field has plenty of space on the ramp (especially since the predator unit will only have 4 airplanes) for both squadrons.
I've been been playing devil's advocate about the 174th, a lot of the pilots hope for the best and expect the worst and it's rubbing off on me. So I've been the naysayer... Well, I'm tired of it! I hope the predator adds to the squadron of Vipers, not replaces. I hope the 174th adds to the few ACC ANG Squadrons to have more than 1 flying unit... |

You know fellas, I am pretty sure Syracuse still has some block 25s. At least, I know they did around this past November when I was up there. Yeah, check out this news article: F-16 makes emergency landing at Syracuse
It was from November of 04 as well. I know they haven't switched since then. So yeah, They are still running block 25s with the crappy PWs between their legs. I was right the first time. |

I am an Avionics Specialist with the 174th FW in Syracuse, NY. We no longer fly the Block 25 F-16. We have 1985-86 model Block 30 jets.
Sometimes the press gets it wrong. Yes, they did have 25's at one time. We did an AEF with Syracuse in 95 and they had nothing but block 30's.

I thought they made the switch in 98... I know they started with 15s in 89, moved up to 30s in 93, then switched to 25s in 98 (Swapped with Austin TX unit), then to 30s again, but I didn't know about that switch... I dunno. It doesn't really matter, I agree with the mix, there are better things to talk about. They are all vipers one way or another. |

Hello all,
Syracuse traded their "Big Inlet" Block-30s in late 1998 as they swapped aircraft with the 149 FW / 182 FS in San Antonio, Texas - "SA" tail code. The "SA" unit stood up as a FTU then. But in late 2002/ early 2003 they swiched to Block-30s again - this time "Small Inlet" Vipers from the 185 FW / 174 FS - Sioux City, Iowa, as the "Bats" converted to KC-135Es........so "Small Inlet" B30s for tne moment!! |

Well it's been over a week, and no word. Guess I'll have to wait some more. |

I think you'll be happy there... syracuse is a great area! I cant speak for your previous unit, but the ppl over at the 174 are truly the best I have ever encountered. You'll feel right at home in no time. Good luck!

Got a message today, sounds promising, I returned the call but nothing yet. I don't think I'm planning on retraining. Prolly gonna stay 2a3x3b.
Also swanee, sorry I missed your q before. Yes the rescue wing is out this way. My buddy is in the guard there, it's a shame, so close to me. Guess I just really like the Viper! |
