What about Vampire, Venom or Vixen ?
IIRC, the Vampire and the Vixen were two RAF fighters, but I'm not too sure. |

Vampire (picture) and Venom (Picture) were RAF aircraft; the Vixen's full name was the Sea Vixen operated by the Fleet Air Arm (Picture)

| Well 1st- it's got those mid-level fairly thin looking wings off of the side intakes, just like the '35s. The body has that same kind of "barrel" shape. Dual-tone paint job... can't tell but looks like gray on top and white on the bottom. And the nose of the sucker is more... "rounded off" like the '35s ( and I mean it's a shorter distance from the cockpit to the tip... unlike say the F-16s) I dunno all the techanical terms... somebody help me out if you know what I'm trying to say |

I am still enamored with the "Phoenix". I have checked several resources including Andrew Chorneys comprehensive Military Aircraft Deisgnation web site (http://www.driko.org/des.html) and Phoenix has never been used for an aircraft. Only use I can find was for the AIM-54 Phoenix missile which is now defunct.
There are significant societal, figurative and physical similarities that make the name a good candidate.
Societal. The Phoenix is a mythical bird that periodically burned itself to death and emerged from the ashes as a new Phoenix. According to most stories, the rebirth of the Phoenix happened every five hundred years. Only one Phoenix at a time.
To "rise Phoenix-like from the ashes" is to overcome a seemingly insurmountable setback. Seems our country is in the process of doing this. I would think that all those families, friends, firefighters and police officers that suffered directly at the hands of the terrorists might appreciate an airplane acknowledging America's enduring spirit in the face of adversity.
Figurative. Another similarity is related to the plot of the movie, "The Flight of The Phoenix". In the movie a cargo plane crashes in the Libyan Desert. When it becomes apparent to the survivors that they are beyond any hope of rescue and have no other choice, they go ahead with a bold idea to construct a new plane by cannibalizing parts of the old one – a race against the elements and interpersonal conflicts.
The F-35 will be built for the specifications of three services as well as the British, using commonality and interchangeable elements to the extent possible. It also requires extensive cooperation between several major DoD contracting teams.
Physical. The Short-Takeoff-Vertical-Landing version virtually "rises" during its takeoff and landing. The image of an F-35 rising up in its takeoff phase or landing creates a compelling similarity to the Phoenix rising from the ashes.
S
p.s. edit. I have lobbied for this name with LMCO and through both official AF and unofficial channels for the last few years.

F-35A Hurricane or Fury
F-35B/C Sea Hurricane or Sea Fury |

I think they shuld let ROTC cadets name it this time
Lord knows not to let AFA cadets in charge of that. Look how bad they butchered the F-16's name their first chance.
We'll get the F-35 Super Duper Falcon or something retarded like that :p
If for some reason this happens guys, I will deffinatly push for Phoenix for you all.

Sorry Phoenix has already been used for an aircraft see this link http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Flygkomp/23Phoenix-2.htm
Bad connotations with "Flight of the Phoenix" Paul Mantz star stunt pilot of "Hells Angles" was killed in the crash at Yuma. |

^ What's wrong with Super Duper Falcon?
Has anyone else got an e-mail from your commanders (if you are AD) to put in a name for the F-35? I got an e-mail a few months ago and I put in a few choices. Just wondering if anyone else has gotten that e-mail. |

Does anyone know when exactly the name will be selected? |

Hoi,
Kestrel is my second choice, but it is more in keeping of the trend of names that the USAF has used.
Personally I think the Osprey needs to be renamed (stick to the Tribal names, they honorable names and stays with tradition of helicopters, which it is close to being). That would mean that the F-35 can be named the Osprey.

This article was available today from the Dallas-Ft Worth Star Telegram newspaper, which is in the city where the F-35 is being built. Pretty informative.
http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/business/14599468.htm
They mentioned that the name list is short at this point and kept secret. As to when the name is actually decided, as stated in the article:
Quote:
The Pentagon wants to name the plane before the first developmental F-35 - the AA1 -- makes its inaugural flight this fall near Lockheed Martin's plant in west Fort Worth. "We're down to a few," said Maj. Glen Roberts. "We're in the finals."
No exact date, but will be this Fall before rollout and first flight.
Like I suggested before, Raven is good! |
