Does anyone know if there will be a two-seat version of the F-35? I can see it happening with the A and C models, but as to how they're going to fit a 2nd cockpit area for the B model, I have no idea. From what I have heard, fuel space is limited enough already on the STOVL. I know the Harriers had two-seaters, but they didn't have a gigantic lift fan behind the cockpit. The only way I can think of is to extend the front section forward, but hey, I'm not an engineer so...any info or clues guys?

I don't think Lockheed Martin ever planned for a 2 seat version of the F-35.

Agreed...it went away the same time the F-22 two seater was cnx'ed. With the ability of today's sims, two-seat checkouts are no longer a necessity.

With technology being what it is, it wouldn't surprise me if they came up with a "virtual GIB" for both jets. Find a way to datalink/telemeter HUD video and instrument status to a ground station and have the instructor monitor and/or correct the stud remotely. He obviously wouldn't be able to take command but at least he'd be able to tell the stud what he's doin' right or wrong.

Not a bad idea at all . Just curious, why not just go ahead and wire up the jet like a drone - let the IP take control from the ground? It shouldn't be too hard with all the computers used for the fly by wire. |
