Possibly the AN/ASQ-73 laser spot tracker/strike camera (LST/SCAM). Someone posted a pic of his Hornet model on the web and included the pod on the right cheek station. If you look closely at the pic below you can just make it out.
From what I gather off the web the -173 was superceded by the AN/AAS-38A/B. |

naw, he's fine up there. When we catch F-18's we have to go up to where he is to 'de-arm' the jet, the electrical 'safes' for chaff and flare are about where he is standing. Now, you want to watch an intake, check out the next recovery you see on an AV-8. You can literally stand RIGHT IN FRONT of the intake on that thing, and in fact you have to in order to put chocks in. TMI, I know  |
