So far from what I've seen the F-35 can only carry AMRAAMs internally. Sidweinders would have to be carried on exterior hardpoints. Do you guys think that the Air Force will be placing less and less emphasis on pilots' dogfighting skills? I know that the F-35 can carry weapons externally but that would only be when stealth would no longer be needed; by that time there probably wouldn't be any more air threats in the conflict left. What do you guys think about this?

My completely uneducated guess is that F-35s will get thrown into the "B-Course" grouping we already got where it is 50% attack and 50% dogfighting. From what I understand the F-35's mission is primarily attack but to get to a target and back sometimes you have to fight. So they need a little bit of that too... I think the F-22 and F-35 will be like the Eagle and Viper now, where the Vipers go do all the work (and fun) and the Eagles just circle an AWACS high on up for hours and hours not seeing anything...

Future,
My understanding is that the Advanced Rail Launcher can be placed on most stations. Does the ARL support the AMRAAM? Or just ASRAAM and AIM-9s?

I dont think that Aim-9X's on the wing tips will create a lot of RCS. My guess is that 2xAim-120C AMRAAM internal, 2xAim-9X on the wing tips will be a standard configuration for F-35A...There is also possiblity that internal bay area desinged for JDAMs still be used to mount addtional Aim-120C's...So, if that's the case, you are looking for 4xAim-120C (all internal) and 2xAim-9X on the wing tips for air-air missions without sacrificing Stealth too much...So, as long as there are no drop tanks and other wing pylons attached, F-35A will perform similar to F-16 Block-50 in the air-air or even better because of Stealth, AESA radar and log drag configuration...What I like most, F-35A carries huge amount of fuel internally. That's the biggest advantage over F-16 I think...

Well, the F-35 will recieve a high off boresight helmet to go with its DAS, so I think that the F-35 would do well in WVR to some degree.

Have they even finalized the design of the f-35?
I'm willing to bet that the F35 pilots will spend 60% of there time on AG. As for who will win? That depends on the pilots flying that day and the scenario.

The USAF has come out and said, that the F-35 will be able to outperform any of the aircraft it is designed to replace, the F-16C Block 60, F/A-18C and, the Harrier family of aircraft. Outperform them in terms of turning, accelerating, climbing, etc..
Whereas the F-35 is more stealthy than the F-22 (head-on only) charging at the opposition gives the F-35 an advantage.

The F22 is stealthier than the F35 frontally, and likely from all other angles. The AF stated the F22 was like a marble, the F35 is like a golfball. JL Raleigh NC

After the F-22 and B-2 bomb all the important first-night-of-a-war targets, the F-35 can be around to do clean up work. Of course it won't be like that. Politics stating that the F-35 will have to do some door kick down duty.... even if it was never needed in the first place. When the F-35 shows up at the tanker before fence-in, it will be meeting F-22s going home to get their second set of bombs.
The JSF will have flight characteristics similar to a clean BLK 50 Viper. More emphasis is put on BVR, but that's the same in the Viper. Fighting BFM is considered by most to be an EP. While history has taught us not to rule it out completely, we are definately training more heavily towards doing business over the horizon. The avionics will be significantly improved over the Viper's and that's really where the JSF earns its money. By the way, the last plans I heard, the F-35 wasn't even going to have a HUD just next gen HMCS.

No VTC no supercruise, unknown Top peed, plus high wing load, the F-35 is not a lightening fighter whereas an attacker only.
