Heya fellas,

The thread made by Entropy reminded me of something which I had wanted to ask in this forum about..

What exactly is the B-Course? Peter Aleshire's Eye of the Viper had a description of the training done there, but I was just wondering... at which stage of pilot training does one go for the B-Course? The trainees in that book had already begun flying the F-16 fighter...so i assume its some sort of continuation training? Is training like IFF and MQT done during the B-Course?

I'm a little fuzzy about the stages of training after you've been assigned to the fighter you'll be flying. Like when does one go for Red Flag? And are there anymore courses similar to the B-Course? Ohh, what about FWIT? Which comes before which?

Jeez, so many questions on my mind, and its all kinda jumbled up. Hope some of the fighter jocks/experts could enlighten me with how the order of these trainings come about.

Thanks a bunch!

B course is RTU... or "F-16 school"
It comes after IFF which comes after UPT [survival training(land,H2) is in between UPT and IFF].
You go to Blk-50 school or something similar depending on which Viper you are going to. after RTU.

MQT is done when you get to your unit/squadron.

You go to red flag as a unit... sort of like a TDY... Its an excercise.

So here is the order from start to finish:
  • UPT
  • Land/H20 Survival
  • IFF
  • RTU (B-Course) (Viper, Hog, Eagle... etc)
  • Any specialty course you may have to atttend. ie: Blk-50 school and so on.
  • Go to unit/sqdn
  • MQT
  • Go kill skinnys

Strike Eagle B-Course is at Seymour Johnson. They fall under ACC, because there are also two operational squadrons. Once you graduate from Mudhen B course, you may either stay at Seymour, going into one of the operational squadrons, or you can go to another operational Strike Eagle unit.

Same deal goes for A-10 drivers, who complete their B-course at DM

C/D model Eagle B-course is at Tyndall. It is an AETC unit, so you must go to an ACC, USAFE, or PACAF Eagle base after you graduate.

Guard Eagle training (for the time being) is at Klamath Falls, Portland IAP, Oregon. After the BRAC goes through, I don't know where they will move the Guard Eagle B-course.

If you're active duty, and training in the Viper, you go through B-course at Luke.

They've been crossing streams in the past few years, active duty FTU students in the Viper can also go to Kelly or Springfield IAP. Active Duty light-gray students also go to Klamath sometimes.

Hmm, ok... so it seems that B-Course pertains to all pilots?

Whats A and C course then? (Cause ive heard these terms before...)

I always thought A course was F-15Cs and C course was A-10s.

A-100% A2A
B-50% A2A 50% A2G
C- 100 A2G

Am i totally misoriented?

Negative. B course is your BASIC course in whichever fighter you are training in. From there, they have upgrade courses for pilots who are returning to the cockpit, read that, fmr. staff officers returning to a flying billet. There is also an instructor course for potential and returning IPs.

You learn weapons delivery and tactics as part of your B course. There is not a separate course, at least in the training portion. It is incorporated into the B course syllabus.

This is from IFF, where they break it down by "tracks" not courses.

The A-track guys are going to Eagles or Phantoms (German AF - only at Sheppard), the B-track guys are going to Vipers or Tornados (GAF - again Sheppard only), and the C-track guys are going to A-10s.

The C-track guys get some A/A also, mainly defensive though.
