This was on another forum and I had to post, too funny!

Quote:
The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday either. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.

So, why Cinco de Mayo? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

I saw a funny thing last week. A flyer (power point) was sent around, essentially an announcement to all hands that there would be a Cinco de Mayo party at such and such a place and that everybody was invited. A noble undertaking by any measure.

Except...

In the upper left corner of the announcement was a Cuban flag;

In the upper right corner of the announcement was a Puerto Rican flag;

The Mexican flag appeared .......

Nowhere.

Oh, yeah, the thing was sponsored by a lcal "Latino" group.

Three words for these guys: Get. A. Grip.

Yes the independance day is celebrated on Sept 16, but it was declared at 2359 on Sept 15 and so the celebration begins at 11PM on the 15 th and carries over to the 16th. So I guess we're both right Very Happy
