A Turkish Air Force F-16 from Diyarbakir AFB in Southeastern Turkey shot down a Syrian Mig-23 today. Two F-16s were flying CAP along the Turkish-Syrian border when two Syrian Mig-23s approached. After several hails from the Turkish Air Defence Center, one of the MiGs returned, while the other proceeded and entered the Turkish air space, thus one of the F-16s fired a missile and shoot it down. The MiG-23 pilot was reported to have ejected from the aircraft and is safe.

Oh Boy! And Syria was warned before, and they also claim that they were on a patrol recon due to rebel presence in the area.

Is the report clear that it was a Viper that brought it down? Some news reports here in Norway were vague on whether a Viper or air defence battery brought it down?
Best regards
Niels

I wonder if this was an AMRAAM or Sidewinder? It seems like it was a BVR launch?

A few mainstream news sources are quoting the Turkish PM for what that's worth:

http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-26706417

"A Syrian plane violated our airspace. Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard," he said.

Live broadcast by HaberTurk which appears to have caught the moment of the plane's crash live on video.

Not much of a contest an ancient Mig-23 versus a Block 40/50 Viper. In fact very foolhardy on the part of the Syrian pilots. If you're conducting a mission near a hostile border surely it would be wise to keep an eye on radar and your current position.

Perhaps this is another example of the now famous, or infamous, "Syrian lead turn."

Anyone know the serial number (and squadron) of the Viper that brought it down?

As for MiG-23's being stupid enough to take on Vipers, this will all come down to pilot and aircraft mods done
Best regards

The Syrian Mig-23 was shot down by a TuAF F-16 from the 181. Sq ''Pars'' (Panther) Squadron.
