A Turkish Air Force F-16 from Diyarbakir AFB in Southeastern Turkey shot down a Syrian Mig-23 today. Two F-16s were flying CAP along the Turkish-Syrian border when two Syrian Mig-23s approached. After several hails from the Turkish Air Defence Center, one of the MiGs returned, while the other proceeded and entered the Turkish air space, thus one of the F-16s fired a missile and shoot it down. The MiG-23 pilot was reported to have ejected from the aircraft and is safe.

Oh Boy! And Syria was warned before, and they also claim that they were on a patrol recon due to rebel presence in the area.

I wonder if this was an AMRAAM or Sidewinder? It seems like it was a BVR launch?

A few mainstream news sources are quoting the Turkish PM for what that's worth:

"A Syrian plane violated our airspace. Our F-16s took off and hit this plane. Why? because if you violate my airspace, our slap after this will be hard," he said.
Thanks for the Images guys, great help.

Not much of a contest an ancient Mig-23 versus a Block 40/50 Viper. In fact very foolhardy on the part of the Syrian pilots. If you're conducting a mission near a hostile border surely it would be wise to keep an eye on radar and your current position.

Perhaps this is another example of the now famous, or infamous, "Syrian lead turn."
