I dunno about that man

How many Phalax cannons does a carrier have on each side? All the missiles came from one side. I have no doubt Aegis is an awsome system but if you lob 30 cruise missles at a carrier with a limited number of Phalax Guns at least one or two is going to get through dont you think? Which is exactly what happend in the movie....if you get the dvd in the special features the director talks about the scene...the whole theory behind it was if you lob enough ordanence at a carrier your going to hit it.

SU34, AEGIS Combat System is not just a simple radar system coupled to a few gatling guns. It is a complete defense umbrella capable of defense against a large scale, coordinated, air (AAW), surface and sub-surface (ASW) attacks. With the SM-3, it can even defense against Ballistic Missile Attack.

In the carrier air defense, it facilitates the deployment of fighters against the adversary long range bombers. If the interceptors are overwhelmed, the anti-missile system comes into picture (SM-2). The Phalanx close-in system is really the last line of the defence.

The Aegis Combat System or Carrier Battle group certainly can be overwhelmed as Tom Clancy has fantasized in his story, but the complexity to engineer an attack to such magnitiude is definitely not as simple as the movie has satisfied the viewers.

cheers,

Ya i agree with you there.....what are the chances of a USN carrier being all alone off the coast of Russia without escort cruisers and destroyers? But whatever, its hollywood...

Any-AEGIS Equipped Battlegroup would be tough to be for sure.

I'd think they should be scared of the X-21(22?) Missile fired from the Tu-22... Those combined with X-41 Missiles off of Su-33s(provided they ever get the upgrade to fire the damn things) even AEGIS would have trouble with.

The X-21 is an air launched ballistic missile. X-41 is a Cruise missile. Enough of both and the battlegroup is going to have to direct Weapons both High and low- Might be too much for the system to handle.

As far as the Su-34, I'm sure it's a monster Fighter Bomber. The Mudhen is also quite the machine, and has proven itself to be so... If the Su-34 goes into combat we'll find out which is king... Keep in mind they both have good A2A capabilities... An Active missile is an Active missile, doesnt matter if it's shot from A Pure A2A fighter or a Fighter Bomber. It'll still kill just the same.

Truer words have never been spoken. There are a few VNAF pilots who got their @$$es shot off in 'Nam, because they underestimated the F-105s. The Thud was designated a fighter, but it was essentially a big bomb truck. It could carry Sidewinders though, and that took more than one Vietnamese pilot by surprise. Shocked

I quote Richard Pryor, from "Funeral Eulogy"...

..."And it seems that death was quite a surprise to his @$$!"

Beers and MiGs were made to be pounded!

X-21 = AS-19 / Kh-90?

I am under the impression, Kh-41 is operational with the Flanker. With the China's Su-30MKK or MK2 at least?
