This is a pretty good article on the Su-34, addressing most if not all of the queries.

Personally, I feel the Su-30MKI a very ambitious project. The marriage of Eastern & Western best technology. If the difficulties of system integration (of 4? different nations) can be resolved, it is one great platform. Definitely deserves a thread of it own.

cheers,

Off Topic Are the Russian bombers featured in the movie, "Sum of All Fears", the Su-34? Some very cool Hollywood's effect.

DeepSpace, I think you misunderstood my post. What I meant was the Strike Eagle retains A2A capability, by carrying the AMRAAM, Sidewinder, and M-61 cannon, but it does not retain the ACM capability of the F-15A through D models. It's much heavier than the Eagle.

However, the Strike Eagle is not a dogfighter, and was never intended to be one. It's a strike fighter, whose primary focus is bombing. We send Eagles out for Air Defense before the Strike Eagle gets there. That's why I said before that the biggest threats to a Strike Eagle would be SAMs, AAA, and a fighter that has yet to be dealt with.

Regarding the vast armament array of of the Su-34, the U.S. already determined the futility of a "do it all" plane with the F-111. The Strike Eagle could be configured to an anti-shipping mission, but that's primarily the job of the Navy, not the Air Force. Truth be told, our ships do more in the anti-shipping mission than our fighters.

As far as the microwave and toilet on the Su-34 go, I say WTF What, you can't eat an MRE and pi$$ in a piddle pack like the big boys? Rolling Eyes Laughing J/K on that one, but a more "luxurious" cockpit does increase weight, and the rear vis on the Su-34 is not much better than an F-111, IMHO.

Good to hear about the "stacked" competition with the Indians. I always thought there was something fishy about what happened there. Evil or Very Mad

Bad things man...Bad things...Shocked

I've heard of guys doing some very weird contortions to...well, you know...Wink while in flight. Unstrap yourself from your harness (keep the harness buckled to the seat) turn around, get your flightsuit down in that cramped space, and find a sealable bag. Major pain in the @$$...(Hey, that's a double pun d@mmit, you didn't think of it!) Very Happy

Most aviation toilets work somewhat-like the toilets in a Winnebago. Once you flush, it goes into a holding tank. Airliners will dump (hey, another double pun! I'm on a roll here!) Very Happy the tanks before landing to save weight. A few years back, some folks who live near Chicago-O'Hare Int'l complained of the "Blue Ice" that was landing in their yards...ewww...Mad

I'm not a fan of the toilet on board a fighter. Note my post about "luxury model cockpits." As a fmr. Life Support Troop, that is one "seat pull" I DON'T want to participate in! Wink

You mean to tell me that people do this in a Viper Shocked ??? Talk about flexible!!!

Airliners don't usually pull neg g's (at least not intentionally Wink ), so I can understand about their lavatories. Just to be clear, are you saying that the SU-34's wouldn't make a horrible mess?

I don't know if anyone's ever attempted this in the Viper. Maybe Gums will see this, although I hate to pick his brain for such a $hitty topic (whaddya know? another double pun!) Wink

I have heard of guys doing this in the Phantom and the Eagle, as against regulations as it may be. I wouldn't put it past somebody to have tried this in the Viper though. I'd hate to end up in a smoking hole just to do #2, you know? I've never suffered this dilemma, however. Everytime I've flown, I made sure I was fully, should we say, "relieved" beforehand.

As for the Su-34's toilet, there should be some sort of valve that would prevent a regurge from the holding tank. If there wasn't such a device, that would make for a very crappy (d@mn I'm good)Wink dogfight for the Flanker crew. I'm still all about the piddle pack for #1 though.

Off Topic Thanks for the correction SU34. But that was nothing more than a fancy Hollywood effect. I am a believer of Aegis Cool

I dunno about that man

How many Phalax cannons does a carrier have on each side? All the missiles came from one side. I have no doubt Aegis is an awsome system but if you lob 30 cruise missles at a carrier with a limited number of Phalax Guns at least one or two is going to get through dont you think? Which is exactly what happend in the movie....if you get the dvd in the special features the director talks about the scene...the whole theory behind it was if you lob enough ordanence at a carrier your going to hit it.

I'm a believer of Aegis, a carrier strike force all armed with Phalanx, and Hornets that can intercept the bombers before they get too close. Exocet is something to watch out for though! Shocked

This is off topic, but exactly how many ships/subs comprise a carrier strike force?

There is the carrier, destroyer, cruiser, battleship, and one or 2 submarines, and probably not boomers, only attack cruisers.
Am I right? Confused

SU34, AEGIS Combat System is not just a simple radar system coupled to a few gatling guns. It is a complete defense umbrella capable of defense against a large scale, coordinated, air (AAW), surface and sub-surface (ASW) attacks. With the SM-3, it can even defense against Ballistic Missile Attack.

In the carrier air defense, it facilitates the deployment of fighters against the adversary long range bombers. If the interceptors are overwhelmed, the anti-missile system comes into picture (SM-2). The Phalanx close-in system is really the last line of the defence.

The Aegis Combat System or Carrier Battle group certainly can be overwhelmed as Tom Clancy has fantasized in his story, but the complexity to engineer an attack to such magnitiude is definitely not as simple as the movie has satisfied the viewers.

cheers,
