Couple of years back I got a ride in a Pitts S2B. AWESOME! Although I'm aware that it is not able to hold its own in modern aerobatic championships. Saw the Red Bull Air Race in Rotterdam. The Americans kicked butt in their Edge 540's! That Pitts friend of mine used to fly the SU26/29 but got a little nervous when about 5 out of 20 aerobatic pilots bought the farm in Sukhoys within about two years. It can do a lot but seems a whee bit too tricky...

That's absolutely true! They're made to be very very sensitive, resulting in a very fast reacting nervous personality...

Well they're designed to have neutral dynamic stability. So whatever attitude you put them in, they'll tend to stay that way. Some more than others of course. But it's necessary to have the response they have.

Otherwise the Red Bull Air Race would become quite a drag... Not that any Pitts takes part in that one , though...

Red Bull Air Race is dominated by the Edge 530, Extra comes in second, Sukhoi third and Cap about last. Depends quite on the pilot too...

Saw that first hand, forgot about the name of the American pilot who won the Rotterdam leg but he was one hell of an aggressive dude flying corners and cutting edges literally.. What a show!

Yup! Mangold was at Reno this year, so wan Mike Goulian. Chambliss was also there of course. All of them fly the Edge. Kirby used to fly the CAP 231, but switched to the 540 recently.

And he took his Edge to Rotterdam, finishing second after Mangold. Our Dutch contender Frank Versteegh ended up in the rear. He flies an Extra 300 twoseater and is more concerned in style of flying than of winning, I guess. A great pilot who used to be a dance instructor...

Some of the most capable aerobatic aircraft in production are the MXS, Edge 540, E-300S, CAP-232 and the Sukhoi's.
