| New to the site and forum as a result of a job switch and had a question regarding "heavy" vs "light" landing gear. Both the South Korea and Republic of China have contracted for avionics upgrades; none of the literature I have seen surrounding these efforts discusses the landing gear requirements. Do the landing gear or related components need to be retrofitted or accommodated to support either initiative? |

In those specific cases I don't believe so.
IIRC, the ROK jets are Block 52s anyway which should already have the heavy-weight gear. The ROC jets are essentially factory-built A/B model MLUs with a lot of Block 5X commonality. So chances are they too have a heavy-weight gear. Any upgrade to either prolly won't require a gear change. |

Taiwan jets do NOT currently have heavy weight gear.

I vaguely remember johnwill (retired General Dynamics flight structural engineer) commenting on this, and correcting me with regard to which block was which.
The F-16C structural changes didn't come until later blocks. The F-16 Block 40s had stronger and lengthened undercarriage to support LANTIRN pods and other enhancements.
@Link16Simdude: The Taiwanese jets were built as F-16A 20s but basically the same structurally and avionics wise a F-16C Block 25. The MLU jets were built as F-16A Block 5/10/15 but the structural changes found in the F-16C Block 25s were not made to those jets. |
