Yea, I did think it had been scrapped. However, there is the S-37A, which made it's apperance at a MAKS airshow, & took the world by storm because it looked like something out of thunderbirds with it's X-29 style forward swept wings. Whether this aircraft will ever go into production is really uncertain, as russia no longer has the budget to manufacture aircraft like these at current times, & it wouldn't enter service for an age even if it did get the go ahead. Maybe it's another aircraft like the X-29, simply designed to test the forward wing design. Who knows?...

Actually if you go to the Topic "difference between Su-35-37-27", the answer is that the S-37, now officially called the Su-47 is only a test aircraft, a Russian X-plane like the X-1 and 2.

Anyway, Russia must start and I think they are starting to find funds for new aircraft, it's important for them to keep up with the US and Europe. The MiG-MFI should be resurrected in my opinion for the sakness of the Russians, MiG& Sukhoi are still active members in the fighters biz but the government that they are offering their commodities to is broke.

MiG-MFI What altitude could it reach?

I have a video of it in flight, I don't think it flew too many times. Being just a technology demonstrator on limited budget.

Yes KarimAbdoun, that's the one, although I did not get it from that site originally. I have videos of the Su-47 Berkut somewhere too, quicktime format.

hmmm.....no offence, but I thought the Russian armed forces has been experiencing severe financial shortages since the collapse of the Cold War? So how is it possible that the Russian airforce have sufficient $$$ to develop the high technology, hire expertise, material for plane structure, etc?

According to the AFM, Feb, 2005:

1. The Sukhoi had finished its NG fighter primitive design and sent it to Russian air-force for study at the end of 2004. The project names "PAK-FA", or "T-50".

2. According to the limited information that has been released, this NG fighter will be:
  • The size and the empty weight between the Su-27 (16,500 to 18,500 kg) and Mig-29 (11,000 to 12,000 kg) series. The normal take-off weight is about 20,000 kg+ class. According to these data, the size and the empty weight of PAK-FA should be roughly equal to F-15C, F/A-18E/F, F-35, or F-15E (12,500 to 14,000 kg) theoretically. However, its thrust will be 60 to 65% more than the EF-2000 today and F-35, 45 to 50% more than F/A-18E/F, 40 to 44% more than the EF-2000 with EJ-230 and F-15C, 18 to 22% more than the EF-2000 with EJ-270, and 10 to 14% more than F-15E now.

  • Equiping two AL-41F1 engines with the maximal A/B thrust of 31,966 to 33,068 Ib x 2 (14,500 to 15,000 kg x 2), which should give the PAK-FA with normal take-off weight the amazing T/W ratio of 1.4 to 1.5.

  • AFAR AESA radar made by Tikhomirov-NIIP (The Russians declared that comparing to the fighter's radar they have now, the NG AESA radar's detective / tracking range will be 2 to 2.5 times bigger) and integrated avionic / EW suits.

  • Stealthy design with internal weapon bays
(PS: Russian declared that they had achieved the minimal frontal RCS of 0.3 m2 class on S-37 three years ago).

  • The predictive time for beginning entering service: 2011 to 2012, although it seems that the time of post-2015 should be more reasonable now.
Another reason for USAF to aquire more F/A-22s, and European to develop and buy EF-2000 Tranch III (or even the Tranch IV (?) with the real stealthy design and EJ-270) in the near future (2012 to 2020).

The original plan of Russian (USSR) 5th generation fighter, MIG-44, has been abandoned now due to its price is unaffordable to the Russian air-force today. But the Mikoyan still tries to use its techonology and the flight data of the prototype to develop and build the lighter, cheaper, and affodable NG fighter in order to compete with Sukhoi.

Some news from Russia recently declared that Russian AF thinks the PAK-FA of Sukhoi as a high-end and expensive NG fighter, and it may need a lighter, cheaper, and low-end fighter to keep the quantity of the Russian AF's fighters. That might be a chance for Mikoyan.

As for the original requirements for MIG-44:
  • Empty weight: 18,000 ~ 20,000 kg
  • Weight for standard air combat: 28,700 kg (?)
  • Priority of design: Supercruise > Superagility > Stealth
  • Maximal speed at high level: 2.6 Mach
  • Maximal speed at low level: 1,000 kts (?)
  • Speed for super-cruise: 1.60 to 1.85 Mach
  • Operational height limit: 20,600 m (?)
  • Ferry range without tanks: 4,000 km +
  • T/W ratio for standard air-combat, sea-level: 1.28 to 1.40
  • Continuous AoA limit: 60 to 70 degrees.
  • Temporary AoA limit: 110 to 120 degrees.
  • Engines: AL-41 turbofan with the A/B thrust of 40,500 to 44,100 Ib (18,370 to 20,000 kg) x 2
  • Delta wings + forward wings + double vertical fins + 3D TVCs
  • Stealthy design with internal weapon bay, the minimal frontal RCS of 0.1 m2 class.
