| 2nd hand F-16s will perform well and suit various individual self-defense/deterrence needs for at least another 15-20 years. Every jet is expensive to sustain, so the total LCC cost will be the issue, relative to a required capability. However, I'm not aware of any current PH interest to acquire 2nd hand F-16s since their decision to procure 12 new-build TA-50's for about $30.75m each? Perhaps there is a follow-on requirement down the road to increase the number of jet-powered tactical aviation for the AFP, but I'm not sure about continued talk about acquiring old F-16s... |

| That would be a great achievement for our diplomatic relationship if the Philippines could work out a deal with the US to purchase used F-16s. |

OMG did that bring back some memories back in the PI. I was in 13th AMU 86-89 ADCC on 1492 with Tim Hucks. Always had to start at Suzie's for the coldest San Miguel in the PI. |

The Philippine airforce has opted to buy a squadron of F/A-50 fighters from KIA instead of the second hand block 25 F-16s (to be upgraded to block 52 standard once acquired) being considered earlier.
Word is that the cost of the two options roughly match but the latter will have significantly shorter service life.
And the number of Jet qualified pilots in the PAF have attritioned severely after years of neglect.
So its better to transition to a more modest option first rather than buy what you can now and have a student pilot test the ejection seat later
From an economic point of view, they can afford to have an airforce roughly the size of Malaysia's maybe, or Thailand's, but the political will is just not there.
Now that China seems to exert some pressure, they suddenly realize how vulnerable they are and that negotiations and diplomacy work best if you're carrying a big stick |

This would be an improvement. I remember the F-5A models, Paf got nearly for free from the Korean government , proved too expensive for them to keep operational. In fact, the static display versions in Aviation park on Clark are in ridiculous condition.
I dont see anything near the possibility to finance a "Thailand sized air force, but something is better than nothing I suppose. |

Their economy has been doing very well the past few years and is widley considered as one of the fastest growing worldwide. The GDP is not far from Malaysia and Thailand.
Sadly, the political will to invest in arms is simply non existent,
my last research showed that they spend only 0.8% of their GDP on defense. So yeah, from an economic point of view, they might be able. the political mood, is a bit, interesting however |
