Hey there guys! I'm planning on going to the airshow at Indian Springs in March, but I'd like to be as prepared as possible.
I'm definitely bringing my camera , but should I bring food and water or are there plenty of vendors there? What types of planes should I expect? Any vintage stuff? I'm assuming it's a pretty cool small town style airshow , but does anyone know how many of the aircraft are or aren't roped off?
Thanks in advance ! |

Thanks for the reply bull , but no, that's not the one I meant. Indian Springs is a small airfield a little ways north of Las Vegas and Nellis. From what I understand, the T-Birds practice out there to minimize problems that they might cause by practicing near Nellis. I haven't had the chance to drive up there yet, but I'm looking forward to the show and seeing the Thunderbirds again !
From your description, I just wish I had the money to go to Aero India! |

Well having attended 3 D-M "Aviation Day" airshows in Tucson, trust me when I say that you can do one of two things:
a) go, minus your own water, but get a second mortgage beforehand to pay for the outrageous prices you'll see for bottled water and other fluids on top of the high food prices
or
b) get a fanny pack or other such device that can hold a couple of large bottles of water, maybe even a third smaller one inside, and take 'em with ya along with a Power Bar or three (or whatever's to your liking). Better yet, fill a "Camelback" backpack bladder with your fluid of choice. You can usually fit some Power Bars or other sturdy snack in along with it. I've hiked in the Tucson area mountains many times and wouldn't be without it, and a good GPS.
What's also cool is if you can get a good aviation band scanner (that covers both UHF and VHF) you can hear the airshow radio chatter in the area. Radio Shack used to publish a book that listed radio freq's for just about every airfield, military and civil, in the nation along with FCC-assigned freq's for the military airshow teams, Blues and T-birds included. That may have changed after 9/11 so ask 'em first before sinkin' money into a scanner.
Have fun, good luck, and hope you can post some pics! |

Link, that's about what I figured. One of the nice things about Miramar was the numerous water buffalos full of drinking water set out all over the flight line. I'd just bring a bottle of water and refill it as needed. Of course it was also nice having my godfather there with the CHP plane to act as my "base of operations" for the day . I'll probably take what I can in my pockets (thank God for cargo shorts !) and go from there as most bases these days are wary of fanny packs and backpacks.
I would absolutely LOVE to have a scanner, but unfortunately one just isn't in the budget right now . I know where I can find one and the freq's on the net, but it's a bit pricey right now.
I don't know who to make the suggestion to, but McCarren airport here in Vegas has done something really cool that I think would be great for airshows. On the south side of the airshow, right on Sunset Road, there's a small parking area where people can park and watch the jets taxi, take off and land. To add to the experience, the airport has patched the transmissions between the aircraft and controllers through on a low powered FM transmitter, so you just tune in to 88.5 FM on your car's radio and you can listen to what's going on ! I think a lot of airshow spectators would love to hear what's going on up there and this would allow them to listen in inexpensively and would also have the benefit of keeping the freq's as confidential as possible. What do you think?
Thanks again and have fun!
Oh yeah, I'll be sure to post some pics!!! |

| The only aircraft that will be at the show is the t-birds. As for food the squadrons will be selling burgers and soda. There will be no other aircraft here that I have been told of. |

Thanks TJStoney ! I still think I'll go - another airshow is a good thing and I won't have to worry about getting rained on or freezing at this one . |
