The article reads that the jet had landed twice due to brake related problems. How did he know? Brakes only come into play during landing not flight. Unless it occured during take off. Either way, sounds like a bad time to have some chornic problems with the jets.

As we understood it, some kind of an emergency light notified the pilot about (possible) brake problems.

That would be the anti-skid light. That would only come into play when WOW is engaged.

That's true. It tends to illuminate on takeoff from time to time. When it does, you either fly the rest of your mission and deal with it on landing, or the conservative answer is to burn down gas and land like the pilot in this case. However, if it does fail, all it means is that you don't have your "Anti-lock Brakes". It's actually not that big a deal, but I guess it made a good news story.
